Buying an Evo X from the US, for Canada

Im looking to buy an Evo X from the states while this dollar is up and nice. Looking at the calculations a used Evo X can be around 25,000 in the states while here in Canada a used Evo X still costs 36,000. I believe buying from the states and doing all tax, border crossing, registering and currency exchange il be saving some huge bucks. I live in ontario so their are 2 taxes. Anyone actually complete a similiar transaction? Il take input negative or positive because im almost in the blank here.

Say an exchange rate of 1.12 gives $28,000
then add 6% duty since car is from Japan = $29,680
figure around $2000 paperwork and importing fees (might be less) = $31,680
+ canadian sales tax (only the federal tax of 5%, no provincial tax since purchased out of province)

and now there are excise taxes for cars that guzzle: refer to this page:
http://www.importcartocanada.info/fa...-from-the-usa/

And remember that a canadian cannot finance a car purchased in the US through Mitsubishi USA. You must obtain personal financing at home, or pay cash.

i brought in my 00 eclipse from jacksonville florida to winnipeg MB. there was a bunch of paperwork to do but in the end the savings far outweigh the hassle. I ended up getting the car and paid 1200 shipping to get it to grand forks to drive across the boarder. You have to pay the duty at the boarder and MAKE SURE THE PAPERWORK IS THERE 72 HOURS IN ADVANCE (or else you are hanging around the boarder for a few days...) you now have to get it safetied (as there is only smog testing in the us...lucky b@$tards!) and get an RIV inspection done (can't be registered for plates til this gets back to you). there are a few small things you must do but they are all cheeper than that (such as DRL's and such). if i were you i'd pay someone about 500 to do all the paperwork and get everything organized (boarder papers and riv papers) someone that maybe works at a dealership and does it daily so you don't forget anyhting because there is a LOT of small odds and ends. Don't want to stray you from this because i am in the market right now for an evo 8 from the states again and putting myself through it again but its worth it. expect to spend about another 1500 ontop of the price (less shipping). Nothing compared to the 10,000 you will save! GOOD LUCK MAN and i hope this helped a little!

You won't be saving much money. PLUS, mitsu US warranties are NOT transferable to Canada

Im not sure if you are allowed to bring an US evo to Canada due to saftey issues. I might be wrong so just confirm this.

It appears that an EVO will be admissible;

Keep in mind when you factor in all the taxes and transportation of the vehicle you will not save as much as you realized initially. Having a differential fail or transmission issues could be a real pain without warranty but you pocket the savings up front and hope that the car won't have too many issues so that's the gamble you take.

I looked into importing from U.S before I purchased my 08 as well. This was when the FX was at par.

Evening paying full MSRP and all the fees for the paper work, I would've saved 7-8K easily and this was for a GSR w/ SSS which isn't even offered in Canada (GAY!)

If you are concerned about warranty, you can always look into 3rd party warranty. I was quoted $2-3K for similar coverage to what Mitsu offers on the Evo. BTW, the savings of 7-8K I quoted above already includes warranty.

If I could do it all over again, I would not think twice about importing.

REgarding 3rd party warranty, if the manufacturer doesn't warranty the vehicle the third party companies won't warranty the vehicle.

I was looking into this and since the US factory warranty is not valid in Canada the 3rd party warranty people won't give you a warranty, or at least that's what they said when I inquired about it.
