Another impulse buyer, will I regret the evo
Well, after test drives in 3 Evos today, one 135i, the Evo wins hands down. Amazing rig. I like the 135 better than the new M3 in terms of driving dynamics, although the M3 is faster. So, there isn't a new bmw that even remotely gets me high.
I'm off to the porsche dealer to drive the new DI cars tomorrow. Obviously they are better quality machines, from materials to how they are screwed together. But, I'm not down with the steep depreciation either. You can buy an evo for the first year's depreciation of a 911. But I'm very curious as to how they compare from a drivers perspective, once you strip away all the pomp and circumstance of the badge.
BTW, I'm NOT impressed by my local dealer. Whoa, what a shock after spending time at Lexus (wife's SUV) and the bmw and porsche dealerships.

Few people have good things to say about Mitsu dealerships. I couldn't remove the advertisement from my trunk lid fast enough.
My last car was a 325xi so I know what you're talking about. The BMW dealer would take me to work and pick me up afterward...the Mitsu dealer was quick to tell me that an air freshener could invalidate my warranty. Buying the nicest car from a down-market marquee has its downsides.

Though I didn't buy a X, I feel I can give you an alright answer.
My current car still does it for me far more than my previous two cars. Both in looks, and fun. And convenience, there's never a time where I go "Oh God, I have to drive again?" like I did with the old Evo (The boy racer problem you described came into play here).
I came from the old Evo, into the Porsche, I loved the luxury and keeping the sportiness. Hated missing ALL of the boy racer/tuner world. Looked at the X and STi and found out to my surprised they'd added a large chunk of luxury and drivability, without hurting the tuner/boy racer qualities I loved.
The X is a great car, that's for sure. If it weren't for my lack of trust in Mitsubishi and my love for the look of the GRs, I may have wound up in one. Even with the things I didn't like about the X, they would've easily been made up by getting one for around 30k with 0% financing. (2k more than I paid for the STi used, with 6% financing)
What Porsche did you have!? My Evo and STi could both easily (weight problems aside) outbrake my Porsche. But unless you had some crazy Porsche (or some other car) your brakes are nearly exactly the same as they were before.
Have you looked at the STi? Or do the looks completely ruin it for you (as it does for most)? I drove both in my quest and found (surprisingly, since I hadn't driven an STi back in the day) that the current STi has none of the things I hated about the Evo VIII (including the painful turbo lag) and everything I loved.
Aftermarket tuning and opening up airflow will help with the turbo lag, but no matter what you do without going to a smaller turbo or bigger motor there is always going to be that problem. I didn't think the 2.5l with a smaller turbo would make the difference it did... But it does. Sure it's got more lag than my 911 had, but it's easily half that of the Evo, and I had a full TBE and tune.
As far as the seats... I wish they were tighter

My wife and I sold our E39 528i and purchased our X. Granted the BMW was very comfortable on road trips but in the end we are very glad to have made the change. She daily drives the X and truely loves it. She would not agree on a 8 or 9 but she liked the X. We got a base GSR as she did not want a tall wing on the car and now I totally agree with her on that. Only thing I wish the X had was a sunroof.
Hope you make the purchase as it has been the most fun vehicle I have driven. It is more fun to drive than my old Gsxr.
When I sold my IX, I was sad......
The IX was a thrilling car to drive all the time...any road/corner/ramp could be made fun.
The X is a very nice car, don't get me wrong, but did not have the same "rush" the IX had; less edgy, less raw.
I don't know if there was a better car for the money than the IX. It's not for everyone, but for the pure driving experience the IX would still "do it" for me; the X, althought still fun, will be not have the same lasting impression.
My .02 on the Evo decision.
I had an 03 Evo 8 for almost 5 years. Loved every minute of having it and driving it. Wonderful experience driving and actually owning the vehicle. Very few problems with it.
I got slightly bored and purchased a 2008 Nismo 350z. This was probably by far the best handling vehicle I have ever driven. This was no sloppy standard 350z, its suspension was far superior with the seem welded chassis to pair but did no good in the winter. Again, this is my daily driver.
I turned at this point to purchase at 2008 STi for practicality reasons. Hatchback, hauling my big dog, just a little more useful at times but still had the power and handling aspecs of my old Evo. I had it tuned, intake, downpipe to get rid of the 2 cats it had. Very fun to drive and very practical but still yurned for another Evo. The Evo X's style finally got to me and I wanted another one.
I traded my STi in 2 days ago for now my Evo X. WOW . . . . this car handles about 98% as well as my Nismo did and just feels so much tighter than the STi. The Subaru had a lot of body roll. When my wife can tell the difference . . . . there is something to be said about the way the car handles. I haven't fully broken in the car yet so I can't really compare on the turbo lag of the 2 vehicles but will know soon enough. I am very pleased with my current decision of moving back to another Evo.
In hindsight of all of this, I should have just purchased the Evo X after letting go of the Evo 8. Could have saved a few bucks but wouldn't have been able to truly appreciate what I had before.
Now I know you are headed to Porsche to go check out their fleet of vehicles and agree with your statements about depreciation and quality. My father has an 07 Carrera 4S Cabriolet. Unbelievable vehicle. Power all the time, handles . . . . and rides like a dream. But as it should, it was near 3 times the sticker price of my Evo x.
Good luck on your decision. I'm sure either way, you will be satisifed.

Your last statement made me laugh a bit though.

My friends thinks I'm nuts since I've had so much hardware. .. some of it not long enough to do an oil change. It seems that as I went for more expensive cars, my tolerance level for warts grew thin and I just kept moving up the chain to solve 'what ails me'. In the evo, it's hard to really complain about certain things in a 30k car. I guess that's the beauty of the evo.
I also miss the tuning aspect of cars I've had in the past. Looks like no shortage of stuff to bolt on with the evo!

there is definitely plenty of parts and fun to be had with the Evos . . . and arent grossly overpriced either (compared to some of the german parts)

I have a feeling i will agree on the 60 to 80 pulls. the extra 1/2 liter makes a big difference up there. from the what little i have driven the X so far (225 miles) it seems to have a little less lag than my old 8 . . but that could be all mental. dont get me wrong, i liked my STI . . . .it just wasnt an Evo.

At my age Ive owned a few cars, all the way from V8 Vegas, muscle cars, off road, street bikes. And Ive driven some high end euro cars that I could never afford.
This car by far is the best Ive owned. Ive driven it all around the country in the past 5 months Ive owned it, and have demanded of it all Ive heard and expected an Evo to be.
It has yet to dissapoint.
And not one hiccup. Not one issue. Ever.
My wife once told me the WRX was like a "Real fast matchbox car". She refers to the Evo as a "Monster"-

I just got mine, i also come from a long list of sports cars..... B5 audi s4, seat leon cupra-r, supercharged 350z, b7 s4, 240sx with sr20 engine. I also bought the x on an impulse thing. I was going to legalize my s4 to the states when i was living in canada and i found out it was a big hassle so i decided to sell it and buy a new car, i came across the x and bought it without even driving it.... Ive had it for 3 weeks now and i have to say im impressed, im also impressed on how cheap it is to mod this car. Trust me unless you are a grumpy old man you wont regret it.
Sold my 335i 6spd that I tracked on a regular basis. Although it has only been a week since owning my recent aquired evo x, when I get out of the car I look back at it and think man, can't wait till I have to go somewhere again!
