Thoughts on a chance of a six speed in 2011
http://www.hksusa.com/info/?id=3656 The HKS project car has a prototype 6spd tranny maybe this will be available in the future for purchase and you can just swap if you really need to.
Remember the EVO X has a transversely mounted engine so to fit a 6-speed in the same spot as the 5-speed will mean that compromises in strength will have to be made. The same reason the IX MR's 6-speed is not as strong as the 5-speed would apply. Subaru can fit in a beefier 6-speed in the STI because the engine is longitudinally mounted so they have room to add the longer 6-speed. For this reason I believe that the only 6-speed transmission offered in the EVO X will be the TC-SST.
I do believe that Dave Buschur @ Buschur Racing is working on a "Bushwacker" transmission for the X. From what I understand all the gears are going to have taller gearing. Dave please chime in and correct me if Im wrong.
I can believe it. Outside of the "oh god I want power!" group, myself included, the SST is a DAMN good transmission stock. Clearly they're catering to the enthusiast as well, but focusing solely on the SST may well lead to higher sales.

MMNA told me there was going to be a 09 and i believed them.
I doubt they will go solely with sst's maybe they will do something like the 370z with rev match stuff, but I hope they come out with a 6-speed for the evo xi but who knows thats to far away.

My source is much more reliable than any internet rumor or theory.
Remember stricter MPG regulations and emissions are on the road map for the next few years and the SST is a way to accomplish some of those goals (ON A FEDERAL LEVEL) It may not be what you want to hear but it is however a fact.
I was planning on getting an MR next year for bad weather and winter driving so I can garage the 03 Cobra during that time. I didn't know the RPMs are so high in the Evo 6 speed. The Cobra runs 2000 RPM at 70 and about 2500 RPM at 83. I know there is a big torque difference between the cars, but still. I wonder if I can put a taller six gear in the auto.
^ I'd guess changing the ratios in the auto is not very likely. 3000 rpm at 70mph is about what I see in my 6-speed ms3. I would guess it is normal. Don't forget, a 4 cylinder at 3000rpm is using less gas than a v8 at 3000rpm (everything else being equal).
Any lower rpm than that and you are going to have to downshift to accelerate at anything faster than a snails pace. Though, I guess with an auto, is no big deal.
