Digital Tach/Shift Light Wiring Question
Digital Tach/Shift Light Wiring Question
I miss my Raptor Performance shift light i had on my last car. Ater doing some research, I think I want to install an AutoMeter DPSS digital rpm gauge/shift light on my Evo X. Where does the tach signal wire go? My last car...I had to tap into a brown/white wire on coil #1, but I dont know how the X is set up, or where I would be able to get a tach signal from.
Also, is it necessary to spend $150 on this tach/shift light? Is there another brand that will function just as good and cost less? I really like this AutoMeter gauge, but if i can save a chunk of cash by going a different brand, and get the same result, I will be happy. Summit has one for like $79. GlowShift is selling theirs for like $50. All it really is is an LCD display and a handful of red LED's...so does the brand REALLY matter? I understand quality differences in Boost gauges, and especially wideband gauges...but I wouldn' think it would matter too much if it's just flashing at a preset rpm.
Thoughts? Thanks in advance!

BUMP. i found a thread on the VIII that the tach signal output was ecm PIN #58...but that doesn't really help me here. i'm not really prepared for trial and error. Evo X tach signal anyone? I find it hard to believe with all the X's on here that not one person has done a tach or a shift light.
I dont think any body knows. No body really needs the need for a shift light just yet if you can't watch the tack while ur racing or do what ever get some glasses bro JK. But we met be for at the BWW parking lot. Spend ur money on something else in my own opinion. Why do you want a shift light any way.

it's not that i can't watch my tach...it's that i prefer not to. when going WOT, i would much rather look at the road in front of me than have to glance at my tach. In my case it isn't a matter of skill, it's preference and safety. you can keep your eyes on the road at all times and shift when you see a light. i had one on my last car and it make for some very consistent shifts. you train your brain to shift when you see a flash of red, i was shifting consistently withing 50rpm of my goal every time.
and it can't be that NOBODY knows. somebody has had to have needed a tach signal at some point. It's not like i'm asking for the middle name of the Japanese guy that operated the machine that assembled my Tachometer...just where the signal comes from. Usually, it's either a pin on the ecm you tap into, or you splice into a wire on one of the coils. for example, i had to tap into the brown/white wire on coil 1 on my cobalt. it took 3 minutes.

*sigh*
It's not that I CAN'T drive. it's a safety/preference thing. having a shift light lets you look 100% out the windshield, never needing to look down at the dash while slamming through the gears. it's useless for daily driving around town, but when the pedal goes to the floor, it's nice to be able to pay full attention to whats in front of you. it also prompts you to shift at the exact same point every time. i recommend at least trying one. it really is convenient to have, and it's nice to be able to keep your eyes on the road.

i'll keep researching to see if i can find an answer. It's only unnecessary if you don't like shift lights, or choose not to have one. do i NEED a shift light? no, but i got used to having one, and it is nice while at the track to only have to worry about watching the road....you just floor it until you see a flash of red...at your preset shift point, and then shift.
I have a Greddy Informeter Touch and I can set when the thing flashes and rings when I hit the a certain limit that I set. Here is a short clip of how it flashes and rings.
