Unhappy Fender Bender

So I got rear-ended last night while slowing down at a light at an intersection. It sucks, but I guess it could have been a lot worse. I'm just happy the damage is relatively minor and that me and the guy that hit me are ok. Unfortunately for his STi, the coolant reservoir ruptured and the car overheated and had to be towed. He was also left with a smashed headlight, smashed front grille, and possibly some radiator damage. He might be looking at a whole new front.

It looks like I'll be needing a new bumper cover, new diffuser, and a new exhaust. I'll know more in the daylight later today. I was hoping the insurance company will consider an aftermarket exhaust as replacement. Does anyone have any ideas as to how to deal with that?

Thanks

Ouch. Glad to hear you are both ok. This only serves to prove that EVO's brake better than STIs!

As for your question, you can get your work done at any shop, so get your work done at a performance shop and have them order the performance exhaust and simply pay them the difference.

what will happen is that your insurance adjuster will come out and make an appraisal of the damage and you'll take your car to a bodyshop or dealer of your choice to fix it. they might write you a check to fix it or they might pay the shop after all is said and done. and since your insurance isn't paying, being that it's not your fault, you can easily get away with an aftermarket exhaust. they usually go by retail prices on oem parts, which add up quickly.

The bumper should be easy to fix cause you can get them painted already. The exhaust is something that you would have to look into.

I dont think its a good idea asking here, I knew a service manager that would ask one of his worker to look on here. He would read the threads to see if they were trying to get over and get extra stuff.

I would "reword" my question..........

The exhaust got knocked out of it's base and it really bothers me to have the diffuser hanging like that. Do I have to leave it as it is or can I re-mount the exhaust so half of it doesn't fall on the road?

I was also just wondering if there is a possibility to have an aftermarket one put in. I can pay difference if I have to, I'm not trying to rip off the insurance by getting them to pay for a $1K system. Should I go get the damage appraised at a shop today? How much would the OEM exhaust cost?

Thanks for the help

the other persons insurance company should be contacting you about sending a guy out there to appraise it unless they told you to bring it to one of there locations. THe way it works depends if they give you the money then you can do what you want. IF they only pay the shop then you better be cool with shop owner to get parts you want aftermarket thats how it works hommie.

Wow, I hope this doesn't turn into a headache. Thanks.

I got a couple of better daylight pics and one pic that I took of his front damage.

I think he said that it skipped a little, maybe brake lock? I don't know. Our Evos are tough though. I just noticed on my pics more detail than I had seen last night and the damage to my car is a scratch by comparison. I should just call the dealer to get a OEM exhaust price.

Sorry to see that man, good luck with the repairs. You are able to request a check from the insurance company to decide where to take the car yourself. Or you can go to different shops and discuss the situation with them, then if they are willing to help, bring the car to them.

a lot of shops will work with you on getting what you want... as long as the aftermarket parts are the same price of cheaper than OEM, if they are not then you will have to pay the difference. but in any case I will same you money on a HQ exhaust upgrade!

Depending on what part of the exhaust will be replaced it maybe even be cheaper to go with a aftermarket exhaust and a nice one at that. For example if you will need to replace the catback part only OEM will cost you about 600 dollars for that you can buy a Greddy catback. Just an idea here :https://www.mitsubishiparts.com/oe_parts_catalog.html

I use to work as a collision repair tech... some things you can do is ask the body shop manager or boss to call and find out how much the factory exhaust is. If the price is higher than an aftermarket one 9 times out of 10 they WILL order the aftermarket one as long as he can keep the difference. I also got rear ended on my EVO 8 almost the exact scenario just slower except i had less damage on the bumper literally a 3in scrath but because of the factory crash beam it crunched the bottom of the floor in the truck but that was an easy fix for me just stayed after work and pulled it out for free! lol
