Need the name of this problem?

Hi I am a new owner of a 08 EvoX just got her for 26k OTD had 8k miles on it. I am curious to identify what is causing this problem or condition? The car is BONE STOCK... I am just trying to see what the name is for when the car builds boost too fast and it fluctuates up and down... Gives the car a push forward then feather's off then pushes forward again, kind of a rocking motion from the turbo... What is causing it and is there anyway to make it more consistent. Like when I am in 5th gear and gas it hard it builds the pressure gradually and much more consistently than from a launch. Help?

Do you know if previous owner had mods on the car & tuned it? If so u might want to reflash the ecu to factory setting.

Sound like it may have had mods and a tune, now that it has been put back to stock it needs a reflash. I would check that out to start with, I know of many guys that put their cars back to stock before they sell it. They dont reflash it cause they just need it to run to the stealership, they just sell it and dont care.

Bought it from south coast mitsubishi in Coasta Mesa... They move the most Evo's in USA... I would imagine they would have checked that when the car came in but I know all too well how negligent dealerships can be... Thanks for the input though guys... I will look into it

Just spoke with Sam (Guy that sold me the car, also the owner of SRT Motorsports) there at South coast Mitsubishi he is the one that races their car's there. The ralliart and the GSR... He said that he'll talk to service on monday and see if they can flash it to stock for me for free... keeping my finger's crossed.

Don't see why scm won't flash it to stock for you. If anything, my guess is the flash version is older than the latest update anyway.

As for the condition, you could just call it hesitation. I don't believe there is a specific name. Like others said though, it's probably the ecu being flashed, unless you have a pinhole leak somewhere...Knowing them, I'm sure scm would take care of you.

Never experienced limp mode, so I don't think that's what it was.

Sounds like the car was "de-modified" and the owner forgot to "un-tune" it.

So last night I went to get the Evo tuned and the tuner and I spend most the night chasing this boost problem so he could start from scratch...

Boost is still spiking to 22-23psi @ peak torque... Checked all the turbo lines and even checked the 3 restrictive pills to see if they were clogged or moved around or even accounted for, they are all there and fine. When we log load on evoscan we notice at this boost level I am near boost limits on the stock map. We even compared all the boost tables, fuel, timing practically everything to a stock rom off the forums to see if it had been previously flashed, all to no avail...

My tuner is eager to figure out the problem so I am sure a breakthrough is on the way but as of last night we were thinking that maybe one or both of the selinoids weren't functioning at 100%?! Any other ideas that would cause this would be great right now!?

Are you sure that it's a boost problem? Do you really see the boost fluctuating so much?

All stock EVO X I've driven (mine too) have these little "jerking" in WOT over 4000 rpm, that is due to the crazy rich stock tune. Stock tune is so rich in WOT that power delivery is not smooth and you can feel these hesitations ("push and pull" repeatedly), typical of very (too) rich AFR.
First thing to do when tuning is exactly lean AFR in WOT: this obviously will lead to higher exhaust temperature, more knocking with poor fuel etc, but immediately to more power and better power delivery.

I don't know if we are talking about the same thing, but I hope this can help.

Ya, that sounds right about rich condition but that is a result of my first problem. Fuel shouldn't cause me spike to 24psi. I am pretty sure it is a boost problem. I am at 22-23psi, and hitting boost limiter, then when I raise limiter it goes up to 24 psi, and without a restrictive pill at 11psi and I dont have this problem... So it seems its a boost issue at this point

Dealers are stupid. Ask them to check it. I am dealing with a similar situation where the previous owner modded the car, took off 99% of the parts and left a downpipe causing me all kinds of issues, and leading the dealer to tell me my warranty was void. I threw a fit, and threatened to sue them for selling me a car that had been modified, and not specifying so. They admitted that they closely inspect all Evos before they take them in on trade. Problem is, one look under the hood for 90 seconds leads you to an aftermarket downpipe. They are idiots, and so are the people at the dealer where you bought your car. Call it complacency. Sales department at my dealer is now paying to replace the downpipe and return the car to stock so that they can fix my problem.

Using evoscan I checked the entire rom...and everything is how it should be... So unless there is something we were missing, (which I doubt cause we went over it for 4 hours) then I don't think it's just from a previous tune... Something hardware possibly but that's the problem at hand
