Car Starting problems...

Twice now since I've got the car in March, when I've gone down to start my car in the morning it has failed to start right away.

I have a completely stock 08 X MR with no added electrical gadgets and as far as I can tell the battery is fine.

Yesterday I drove home normally and backed into my parking spot. I started the car this morning the garage was a 55deg and the car just turned, turned, turned without firing.

Paused for a second, tried again and gave a flick of the gas pedal and it came to life.

Is my throttle too closed at startup? And then again if so why has it only done it a few times.

Does this occasionally happen with Turbos? Never experineced this issue with NA engines.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Could be your battery. Have you had it tested?

Could be any number of other things. Have you visited your dealership?

I had the battery tested when I got the car because of the known battery issues and it was fine.

I'll have to have it tested again just in case... I just got to work today after having it happen this morning and though I give the EvoM community a crack at it and help me do some compact car trouble shooting.

I'll just have to make a list

#1: Check battery again

check your battery terminals. Mine was loose and I had the same issue you're seeing.

This isn't a typical problem with turbos in general.

It's some kind of a problem with our cars. This has happened to me in an Evo and a Lancer Ralliart.
The starter turns fine (quickly - not like a drained battery); it's just that there is absolutely no combustion.

It's some kind of a "glitch" in the factory tuning that affects ignition timing at start-up - in some cases, it just "forgets" to add spark .

As far as I know, there's no fix for it.
I'm not sure if any aftermarket tuning affects the occurence of this or not.

I would think that if it's turning over (and it sounds normal) that it has nothing to do with the battery. A low battery, or improperly connected one would yield no turning over, or not quite enough turn to get a start.

I have had this happen to me once with my car. It was about the same conditions, except that it was leaving work, about 4 hours after using the car for lunch. However, in my 09 Lancer GTS, I had it happen to me 5 or 6 times in a year.

I also have a stock 08 MR and have had random starting problems. Just today it started for about 1-2 seconds and then cut out and stalled. Not the first time either. Sometimes I have to keep the starter on for what seems like a long time, but probably about 5-6 seconds. Still too long for a new car. It happens about once every 2 weeks.

I had this happen multiple times when my car was new (the first month). I got the car tuned and it hasn't happened since.

MY stock 08 GSR SSS also suffers from this.

That and random low idle or high idle when coming to a stop...

Does the throttle even register at start-up?

Figured it being DBW, it wouldn't have a direct effect on start-up...

I had a Walbro pump in my WRX and I needed to wait a couple seconds for it to warm up before starting or it wouldn't work right...

Try turning it on and waiting a couple seconds...

Yes, the ETV registers at the first turn of the ignition key (there's even a quick self-check routine to verify the closed throttle position).

I do, however, agree that this has nothing to do with the actual throttle position (no disrespect to the poster who mentioned it, but I don't think that the "blip of the throttle" directly influenced the actual startup in that case).

I can imagine that an aftermarket fuel pump (especially a high-flow one) would need to build pressure before ensuring proper fuel rail pressure for startup.

mine seems to do it when the nose is parked a little higher than the rear and the gas tank is low. fill up and see if it ever does it with more than 1/2 a tank.

Question

Could it be the spark plugs? How many miles on the car?

Do you turn the start key fast or slow? On my other cars if you do it step by step it start always and if you just do the turning motion fast than sometimes the car takes longer to start. Maybe it is same with Mitsubishi? I know VW owners manual always mentioned to do that step by step turning the ignition key. Just some things to help out.
