Display reads ---??

So I had a little OMG today. I was driving my Evo X and noticed the gas miles left was 30. Decided to start heading to the nearest Shell Gas station(the only gas I use) when the screen read ---miles left in the middle of afternoon traffic. The whole time I was like please lord dont make me pull over and start walking. So I learn my lesson today. Never go below a 1/4.

Why would mits make the screen go blank like that? Makes no sense to me.

It is just an estimate. When the fuel gets that low, there is no good estimate available.

I wish I learned my lesson that way...mine happened to be a little worse. So I'm on my way to Englishtown Drag Raceway for Evo vs WRX and I figured I was getting really close to the track so I decided to not pull over and fill up the whole tank because I wanted it to be as empty as possible so I can do my runs on race gas...turns out I'm an idiot, the car runs out of gas on the parkway, there's absolutely no shoulder to pull over on...I'm on the fast lane with my car at a complete stop, I had about 13 close calls of getting rear ended by cars going 70mph.

Long story short...I call for help...a statie shows up, starts talking on the speaker and next thing I know he says "put the car in neutral and let off the brake pads", I hear a thump and I realize I'm getting pushed off the highway by him.

So...I end up with a scraped bumper, a lesson learned, and best of all I got to keep my life

My car is good for quite a few miles after it goes --. I've run it down there three times (once on purpose for E85 conversion) and it was good for the 10 miles that I needed to get to a station. I wouldn't care to run it more than 10.

Seriously!

This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone who has driven an Evo through a full tank of gas - depending on the driving style, it's conceivable that you could get just 200mi. out of a tank.
25mi. is 1/8th of that - that's not unreasonable for a lowest possible "distance to empty" indication!

I think the fuel meter is a better indicator of when to refuel, rather than watch the estimated miles left. When the meter hits rock bottom, meaning there's no visible fuel level, its time to refuel... But this is just how I do it, if I ever get that low.

or wait till it chimes and says u need to refill, then if u keep driving it will chime again and the screen will go to a permanant exclimation mark, thats when u really need to put gas in, but even at that point u still have at least a gallon left

Even with the "---" you can still go about 20-40 more miles. I believe it has about 1-2 gallons left (I usually fill up with 12.5-13.5 gallons when it says that, and it's a 14.5 gallon tank). Although it's probably not a good idea to push it too much when it gets to that point.
