supras are really nice and rare. they are more expensive to mod than evo x and more eye catching if they are well maintained. (other wise supras are just old...) The engine is bullet proof and reliable, transmission is good as well. If you want to get into drag or go straight lines, the evo is not for you.

Trust me on this, if you are debating about supras or evos, you are comparing bananas to apples. supras are old, but if you already had dumped money in it and made it look like a champion, don't go for an evo. in the contrary if your supra is nothing but a 600whp machine, and everything is falling apart. get an evo.

Sounds like a Supra so far.

the 3S doesn't respond to mods all that great, and the drivetrain was weak.
That's where the similarity ends. The 2JZ responds incredibly to mods, and the drivetrain is great. I don't adore the old All Tracs, but would prefer them over a Supra. I'd take an Evo of that time over both.

So to build a 1300RWHP Mustang, it's going to cost a "fraction" of what it costs to do the same to a Supra? Doubt it. Big HP is big money, no matter what platform.
Well, you are wrong. The car itself is thousands cheaper. Upgrades are much more plentiful, accessible, and cheap. Yes, big HP is big money, but you can run single digits in a Fox Mustang without the traction maladies you get in a Supra. The Mustang is made to be a drag racer, its much lighter weight, solid axle, cheap. Would I ever own one? Heck no! In case you've missed it, I'm not interested in drag racing. And herein lies the point: Mustangs and Supras are the exact opposite of what I value in a car. I don't care about fapping to big dyno numbers, nor do I care about street racing from a 80mph roll, or standing mile times.

Let me ask you this? How much would it costs to get an EVO to 1300WHP? Can it even be done?
Why would I want to build an Evo to that amount of power? Its a 2 liter four cylinder. All the fastest drag race cars in the world are big displacement for a reason.

I just don't understand how someone can say the car is over rated when it's accomplished the things it has. It earned that reputation, no one gave a crap about them in the 90's until they started making a name for themselves. Now people know and give them respect accordingly. I can understand if you don't like the car, that is fine, but to say it's over rated is just inaccurate.
Its overrated for what I value. I care about cars that handle well. I prefer to have more usable interior space, I want a warranty if I spend 35k on a car- I want something that gives me bang for my buck (where the Supra fails miserably because of their market value due to perception).

Oh, they can also do some damage on a road course. They aren't just highway demons, that's just their specialty.

Leh Keen is a pro-level driver. He's raced everything from Porsches to Subarus, Evos, and even Supras. Like you said before, you can make any car fast. You can even make a Supra or Mustang shine in the curves on a proper racetrack. But Supras are not road course cars. They are not even remotely autocross cars. They are dyno queens and highway roll cars.

It is pointless for you and I to continue this discussion. We aren't interested in the same kinds of motorsports at all. You love the Supra, great! For someone that loves a Supra (like the OP), I can't understand why he would want an Evo X instead of, for the same reason I would never take a Supra over an Evo.

Easiest way to 500whp is a 3586HTA with 25psi and supporting mods on 93pump. You will have to sacrafice some low end, but its working out great for me.

The drivetrain isn't weak at all, but otherwise your spot on. I test drove a 92 and drove in another 91, they were turd. I wanted one for a long time, but when you need to turbo upgrade just to run 13's the asking price for them isn't worth it.

i would never pay close to 20k+ for a 13+ year old car. You will hope to sell it and get some of your money back then again 60k for old tech you can buy plenty of newer cars with massive whp if thats all you want. for DDing ablitiy ALL the time the evo hands down. I understand what a supra is but i dont mind looking at them but paying for something i know is OLD i just cant justify in my mind is a sound purchase.

My neighbor and I both owned Supras and had a friendly competitive sprint in building our cars. However my priorities changed and needed a vehicle that was more suitable for my growing family. So like any right minded parent I sold the Supra and purchased a EVO X.

Do I miss it? I do reminisce the good times with that car. But every time I still see my neighbor still fixing his Supra 670+ hp. I don't have any regrets selling it. Or the attention from the local authorities.

Maybe down the road, I may purchase the Supra again as a weekend car but not for a DD. The EVO X fits the bill.

Supras are fun, but they take a ton of $$ to get decent HP. AWD is a huge plus for the Evo and very affordable to mod.

Why is that important? 1300 is not a very usable number on the street and the OP is talking about a DD even in winter. Why is it big shock that a 3.0L engine has a higher ultimate potential then a 2.0L especially when they are both DOHC, turbo, inline and both manufacturer's best efforts? AMS may be close to that number but their drag car is not the norm, nor is it remotely streetable. I do not believe that a Supra at that level of tune could be considered a reliable DD despite what every one seems to say about Toyota's quality. Its not a knock against the manufacturer to say that a science project like that built on a 12+ year old car is not something you'd trust on a long trip.

No Offense but 700 whp evo's need their attention as well. to the OP, you can make 500 whp pretty easy with the evo's and for DD'ing its a fantastic car something sweet about a supra though.

I would prefer a GTR / used GTR if they were legal even over the evo. I make 500/465 and for me, the car is plenty quick and I dd all year round. I just like the potential of the Skylines and they sound much sexier than any evo

I don't think anyone is denying that, but it just comes down to throwing a bunch of mods at a 0-6 year old car versus a 11-16 year old car. The newer car is more likely going to be more reliable. AWD is going to make use of more power eaiser and the stiffer car with the better chassis and suspension set up is going to handle better. That's an Evo all day long.

i skipped all other threads just to read this and put my .02 in. Me personally i am in love with the supra. One of the sexiest body styles ever created and strongest motor that i have seen. Not too many motors that can handle 700+ hp without breaking into the block. Personally i would not part with the supra. Like others have suggested just get a little dd, the wrx's are pretty cheap nowadays. Still has awd and turbo but without the sti price tag. Keep the supra and just buy something else.

As far as 1300hp evo, i have seen a video of one. They really didnt show any numbers or anything, but its some evo like in london or something like that. Supposidly its the first to 1300 but like i said the video was not the greatest. I am sure AMS will eventually break into those numbers. Just takes some more creative engineering.

No but the supra holds its resale value better, proven. I don't really care if anyone agrees with it, its just the way it is. Again, i think it comes down to what you really going to do with it.... Its the same thing with the NSX's with low miles

if you do a full build on a supra - full suspension - full brakes - replace seats - build engine - turbo kit - too me, thats a new car......

people do that with evo's daily as well - whats the difference on the reliability factor there?! Kinda a mood point if you ask me.

Then it comes down to handling - sure the evo ranks in probably the top cars produced but if he REALLY has a Supra that weighs in around 3000 and a tuned suspension - that car is going to turn without a doubt. If awd was the best platform to build on , why are the fastest cars in the world rwd? ie - enzo - f430 - noble - etc. etc etc etc.

Looks - thats an easy one for me - supra without a doubt wins this category for me.

People keep saying dated looks - really - ask yourself why acura / honda kept the same body styling on the NSX for how many years - that body style that really still resembles the new ones. the look doesn't get old and it performs the way it was designed.

Without a doubt the evo is easier because of the 4 door and awd but if you live in the south or west and dont have to worry about the seasons - who gives a crap if its awd or not...

Buy some cheater slicks for the supra if you want, it will hook at some point

I love my evo and living in the midwest - no way would I get a supra because i love the snow too much - the best of both worlds would be a modified supra and a dd mildly tuned evo x because ryan gates is my hero

Don't do it! Keep the supra and search for another alternative.

I don't care about resale value. To me that's along the same argument as Honda guys talking about gas milage or hp/liter. It doesn't matter when we're talking about hacking up cars with performance mods and beating on them at the strip or race course. If the car is doing what I want it to do, I'll keep it. I don't buy a new car and trade it in after a year or two and get upside down on a loan, or lose cash. No matter what car you buy, it happens to all of them - depreciation, some just hurt more then others - but they all hurt. You think all those original buyers who traded in Supras after say 3-5 years got money back? No. While they were being produced they depreciated hard like everything else, they didn't sell well and that's why they stopped making them because most people would rather have had a 4Runner or other SUV during the mid 90's. Mitsus have generally had crappy resale, however the Evo has a very good resale value. And it is CURRENTLY in production. The Supra could not say the same. How much is a MKIII worth? Does anybody even care about them, really? Usually when a new body comes out its death to the resale of the old one, yet old Evos are just as strong in book value as ever. There's also already 3 times as many Evos in existence in less amount of time, something along the average of 3500 produced/sold in this country (almost) each year. There are less then 5000 TT MKIV's period in this country.

if you do a full build on a supra - full suspension - full brakes - replace seats - build engine - turbo kit - too me, thats a new car......
But its not. There's still lots of things that can go wrong. You could replace everything: wiring, HVAC, lines, hoses, bushings, etc, but you end up being into the car for a lot more money then some guy with a Mustang, even one 5 to 10 years newer and he'd still have a comparable straight line car. That's the point Noize was making, I think.

people do that with evo's daily as well - whats the difference on the reliability factor there?! Kinda a mood point if you ask me.
I don't get it. What are you saying here?

Then it comes down to handling - sure the evo ranks in probably the top cars produced but if he REALLY has a Supra that weighs in around 3000 and a tuned suspension - that car is going to turn without a doubt. If awd was the best platform to build on , why are the fastest cars in the world rwd? ie - enzo - f430 - noble - etc. etc etc etc.
I don't care and it doesn't matter. Like you said the Evo ranks among the top cars produced. The fact that its a Mitsubishi, FWD economy car based, mass produced and relatively cheap are just things people bring up to hate on it, it doesn't change the results. The fastest cars in the world aren't available for $30,000 or so a few miles from my house, but the Evo is. Those exotics you mention are lighter, more powerful and don't need AWD to produce the same or better results because of the materials they use and the different approach to production. They also cost more. A lot more.

Looks
I didn't say anything about looks. But I think the Evo and Supra are both great looking cars.

Without a doubt the evo is easier because of the 4 door and awd but if you live in the south or west and dont have to worry about the seasons - who gives a crap if its awd or not...
I do. I love the AWD, and I've never even driven in the snow with my Evo. IT makes the car a superior performer even on dry pavement. To say or think otherwise is a gross misunderstanding of what the Evo is all about.
