Saying goodbye to the X

After two years of ownership I'm having to part ways with the X. I've been jobless for close to a year now (factory shutdown) and can no longer make the payments on unemployment checks, I'm looking into purchasing a 95 to 99 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX? If any of you guys can provide me with information on the 95 to 99 GSX I'd be more than happy, as I know some of you guys have owned either the GS-T or GS-X... I know it won't be anything like the X, however when you go from making 600 a week to 253, I'm sure the GSX will be a welcome trade off. I guess my main concerns are the strengths and weaknesses of the GS-X, I've looked around on search engines and haven't really found online communities like EvoM. Does the car actually handle decent? Is the turbo lag terrible and I've heard about crank walk although I have no clue what causes it or helps prevent it? I'm not really worried about 0-60 times more or less the handling, reliability and safety are my main concerns. Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks

P.S. I've never owned a DSM, I've only owned true Mitsubishi Lancers! Hopefully DSM won't let me down.

Have you considered a Talon 2g? A lot like an evo. Throw an evo 16g turbo on there, get a tune and you have a pretty neat machine.

Sorry to hear that you have to part with your car, I hope you had fun owning it. Good luck on finding a new job and getting back into an Evo again someday.

just be careful especially in your situation because dsm's can be unreliable at times and may need some $ here and there. (hint the crankwalk i think is mostly present in the 7-bolt engine not the 6-bolt)

First, I hate to hear about your job situation! I hope the best for you that something better than you had before will come along so you'll be in a good financial spot.

As far as a 2G DSM, they have virtually no turbo lag, as the stock turbocharger is very small. 16G upgrades are common, and it will have similar power:weight of an Evo VIII. Without Mivec, there will be some very perceivable lag compared to the X, but not too terrible.

Stock, they handle terribly, and their brakes are unspeakably awful. This is where the Evo VIII just flat out kills it and upped the game. To me, I would not want a 2G, they are a bit too old, and the quality of them is very questionable.

I've seen clean first and second year WRXs go at $8000 or even less. If I were on a budget and fancied staying in turbo + AWD, its a much better car than a 2G could ever dream of being.

Anything older than an Evo IV, I'd not buy a Mitsubishi, personally. Heck, I'd opt for a used Integra GSR for 2G money and have a much better overall car. Hope this helps.

anyway you could get something else new that the payments wouldn't be so high? The safety of an older GSX like that won't be anywhere near what the X is.

So much misinformation in this thread. wow.

My .02.
Crankwalk is way over rated, look for a close to stock 97-99 gsx/gst. Do ALL basic mantainance before mods, and keep it simple. 16g, 190fp, 18lbs, dsm link to tune, and you will have a solid, fast DD. O-ya stock handling is not so great, 1in drop spring (brand of your choice) and some KYB agx struts/shocks maybe evo VIII wheels. You should be able to do this for around 6k if you can work on it yourself. I have been making good power on my 97gst for many years with out issue.

couple pics of my car and a mod list (3rd or 4th post down) if you want to check out what I did...

fun cars, best thing is to buy from older person, 2g talon or eclipse, when you are about to mod, go simple, big16g, fmic, fuel pump, oem injectors from evo, even safc2 is ok, mbc, filter, cams, full exhaust. lower on eibach sports, 1.6inch drop, buy wheels from 03+ evo, and you have a nice realiable car. my black 95 X was fun as hell to drive, small, and i like the way you sit in dsm/dashboard.

I would like to stay with Mitsubishi as far as manufacturers go. I'm looking for a non-modified GSX, believe it or not I've come across a handful. I'm more of a backyard mechanic, as far as working on vehicles and modifying them. I can do simple bolt ons and repairs, however I left the X alone due to all the electronics involved. First and foremost I'd like to thank all you guys who posted replies, means a lot and I had a heck of a great time owning the X, it was more than just an experience!

I still have my stock X rims and tires, I see the GS-X uses the same bolt patterns as the X, maybe I'll keep my stock enkei's and not sale them after all? I've also considered the Starion, I know it's old but the age doesn't scare me, the older the vehicle the more inclined I am to work on them, nor do I have to worry about factory warranty. I know I could find another brand of vehicles, however I feel really strong about Mitsubishi and would really like to stay with them. This message board has been great and I plan to post on here from time to time, hopefully I'll be able to get back into a turbo charged AWD car for around or under 10 grand. Thanks guys
