My Evo 8 has a turbo whine, but it's normal, some have it some don't. I checked and no shaft play.
Simply take it to the dealership and tell them your concern, if it is normal they will at least put my mind at ease.

If it truely just is a sound issue, just put on an AMS CBE...then U won't hear anything but the exhaust note.

Later, Ken

Yea I get this noise too through the speakers when I'm charging my ipod and playing it at the same time. But this is definitely coming from up front.

I occasionally get the same whistle/whine noise as you. Seems to only happen when weather is colder. I've narrowed it down to about 3-4k RPMs in 3rd and 4th gear, at about 10psi.

Sounds like some kind of harmonic with the impeller.

I want to bump this. Been getting a loud whistle sound that is at the same tone. The loudness of the whistle may vary, but the tone is the same. Kinda like when you blow on a blade of grass. When I accelerate at 3/4 throttle, the noise will come noticable and for sure it is not the turbo spool. The turbo spool isn't as loud as this.

Does it do it louder in higher gears?

I drove mine up to PA, from FL. And while I was at the 10 hour mark or so of straight driving, whenever I would start to spool, even the slightest bit, I would hear a high pitched noise. I think it was just to hot out, then it started raining and the sound went away in a couple minutes.
