Turbo whine/screech

Lately I've been noticing that my turbo or something makes a weird high pitched whine or almost screeching sound. It's not too loud and it only happens sometimes but it's concerning. It happens around 3k when I'm holding my speed and up near 7k. Maybe I just haven't noticed before but it seems new. Normal? Not? What might it be?

If you hear it while boost is building, and sounds like a tornado siren, louder as speed increases, its the Transfer case going out.

Nah, I've seen the videos of TC's going and stuff, doesn't really sound like that at all.

We don't know much about your car but the color.... It's hard to figure it out, unless you have any more info to share with us.

Newbs not allowed to post in the general section? And my bad, I just realized that. No mods, ever. 20k miles. I treat her nice, no launches. TC = transfer case, no?

If it is stock, no mods, If I were you, I would take it to the dealership, and that should take care of that. I'm not sure on a diagnosis, given those symptoms. That is the best advice I know of. Good luck, and keep us posted.

Yeah, I'm the only one who's ever driven it too. By fluids you mean oil? Yes, every 3k miles.

My X turbo whistles a little at low RPM, none of my other Evos did that I can recall, but I wouldn't sweat it.

If you are worried about it, pull the inlet hose and check the blades for damage. That will set your mind at ease.

I don't know what smokedmustang's problem is, but you do have a legitimate concern here... I've experienced this in my X and even more so in my TSi. First of all check your ground, I mainly received this noise when I would plug my cell phone in the cig. lighter for charging while talking on the phone; it's was a winding/siren noise that seems to follow to the tune of our turbo spooling. It sounds like an electrical frequency, thats why I'd check my ground and see if it were good. Right now I'm running an entirely different turbo than what was on my X, it's a TD05 12a and it still makes the same sound as my X, it could very well be a Mitsubishi thing?

P.S. If you want to quite your engine/turbo down I suggest using Royal Purple oil, it makes even the loudest lifter knock livable!
