Not sure if anyone has completed this idea or actually went through with it without giving into a aftermarket intake system. But figure i throw this out and see what you think.

A write up would be great. I was thinking of this for when I finally get an EVO X. Make it as sleeper as possible. What after market intercooler pipes work with the stock airbox? I was thinking of doing dual Ram-air inlets for the airbox by modifying it somehow. I just cant justify spending big bucks on an intake.

Im using ETS Kit with 3.5 and LIPC doesnt even come close to making any problems. I also cant really justify it, its hard to make sense to me that a intake pipe requires a $300+ tag on it. The stock airbox is a good design and no reason to throw it out. All you gotta do is rid the accordion mass pipe

with a smoother tube/pipe, cone filter and trim the stock airbox a bit. And you basically triple your cfm rate spending 3-4 times less.

what is the flange diameter of the K & N you used 70mm or 76 mm? Also can you include the part numbers thanks.

Does that round filter really have more surface area than a square "drop in" filter?

I would think a drop in filter would flow just as well.

By the looks of it I also was thinking this The panel filter has deep filter grooves with a lot of surface area. I just noticed
that your k&n has a 2 inch flange, I guess the stock box exit
tube requires this. My guess would say that the after market intakes
with 3 inch filter flange flows better and this is where the increased
airflow comes from.

Ive had a drop in on my setup and it felt restrictive to me, car just felt sloppy imo. It was a easier and cheaper route then other cold air boxes also. And Golden why are you arguing a idea that you bought yourself for a $300+ price tag? AEM is a airbox with a cone..

Its a 2inch flange meaning length of the flange. The inside diameter of the flange is 2.75", the maf pipe inside diameter is 2.5", the other side is 3". A full 3" maf pipe with 3" inside diameter flange would benefit. A 3" inside flange diameter going over a 2.5" maf inside diameter would make no difference as the maf housing would be restricting it anyways. Only company that makes a full 3" intake is AMS to my knowledge, but ill save my $350+.

No ive bought the Perrin intake pipe awhile ago when it was $70, been using that.

K&N Cone is RU-3190 Retails $45.14 but if you go to clemmonstrading, google it. You can snag it for $25.82. There insanely cheap for filters and such there. Do FedEx Home and i usually get it in 3-4 days.

The K&N Cage to cover the airbox is 07298, but you have to call K&N and order from them as nobody else will know wtf that part number is.

Ill be updating soon as im getting retuned as the cone filter is pulling a p1238 code. And i know for a fact my MAF isnt bad. Only other reason i can think of is im going pass airflow limits my panel filter had on the load tables.
