Evo X spark plug problems

I don't know how to use the vB search function all that well, so i'm sorry in advance. I searched the Evo X forums only and found nothing about this.

I wanted to post these pics here, since I have seen this happening to more people besides myself, and wanted to hear some feedback from others experiencing the same thing.

Below are the 2 plugs that have cracked on me. Both in Cyl #1 (which seems like the common cyl for others also). IN THE FIRST PIC, THE INSULATOR IS RESTING ON THE STRAP. THE STRAP WAS NOT HIT BY ANYTHING. I pulled the strap back to remove the broken insulator on one of them.

Any info on this that I might have missed somewhere? I have talked to the folks at AMS and they run stock plugs on their x's with no problems so they didn't have any answers either. Talked to my tuner, no answers.

I figured if its happening to others, there has to be a common denominator somewhere, and maybe someone here knows it

Much more common than we all want it to be.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you likely have serious engine damage.

Look here:
https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...misfiring.html

The basics of it are piston damage that causes debris in the combustion chamber hammering the plug closed, then eventually spitting itself out the exhaust and destroying the turbocharger.

The cure is an engine rebuild.

David, have you figured out a cause?

And to "Noize"...

I think that is a completely different problem. The only good news in my situation is that the plugs aren't showing any signs of material making contact. In the first pic the strap is not hammered closed. The insulator cracked off and it is just resting on the strap since it is upside down. The insulator is cracking off from the inside in one piece. I have read about the ring problems though, but that doesn't seem to be my situation as of now.

Maybe this info will help too...I forgot to explain how it happened...

The first time it happened, was right after my tune on my way home. I dont know if bouncing it off of the rev limiter during the tune may have caused it because....

The second time it happened, I had an instructor (and friend of mine) driving my Evo at Willow Springs showing me the lines, and he bounced it off of the rev limiter a couple times and the SES light came on. We pulled in, pulled the plugs and the one I replaced in cyl 1 cracked just like the first one.

I had an aftermarket plug fail, it was only two weeks old, and when I pulled it, the threads stayed in the head, and only the electrode came out :ugh:

I have a plug exactly like this
The only mods being an aem intake and cobb flash.
Though i'm sure it was related to the car hitting the revlimitor on an automatic shift the night before.

I'm running the brisk silver plugs because of threads like this. Hopefully they dont have this problem. They are also one degree colder.

I hate seeing threads like this. I know our plugs are abnormally small (12mm) unless your a dirtbike, but this is still a very odd issue. Is there a safe plug to buy? Are the HKS plugs holding up, or the Brisk plugs that were just mentioned? Ive never heard of Brisk Silver plugs before, is it a Denso plug or something?

Brisk is a european spark plug brand, I used to have them in my old old b-series motor and they work fine.

Peronally, I never have issues with NGK and HKS but I did have something happened similar with Denso IK plugs. Luckily my engine survived.

i think the HKS is supposidly an upgraded NGK. So basically is a same for a X , some materials are better quality as i heard.
