Yeah trading in cars sucks. When I got rid of my S2000 a few years ago to clear some debt to buy a house I took a bath on it, ugggg. I promised myself I'd never do that on another car again

Its a good question that I can't answer because they don't have any. In a two county area of 1 million people, there is one Mitsu dealership. They share with VW, north of town is Mitsu and VW, south of town is VW only (I'm south of town).

The buyer at the dealership claims they had to auction the last X they had at $22k. I call BS, and agree with Evo-KNA above who said they will turn around and ask $32k. They can't have that many Ralliarts and not one Evo.

When I was looking to sell my Evo X, the BMW dealership that I visited pulled up the Manheim Auction prices and the range was between $24k-$27k with cars ranging between 12k-18k miles. It didn't show any features/options or whether the cars were GSR/MR. But, I did see the screen and saw the range of prices. This was in the middle of March.

Its the economy and nervous buyers at car dealership, which cuts both ways. They might be worth $25-$27k, but they will offer you 5k less to get revenge for having to sell cars so far below sticker.

Basically, you can get a great deal if you don't have a car to trade in.

I can remember when i went to trade my 9 in and the dealership told me that i was crazy for the number i wanted for it - that i would never get close to it. I wanted 25,500 and they wouldnt come up off of 21,800 or something absurd. The guy kept telling me that they are a dime a dozen and that he will have to compete with the other 3 that were within the area and would never be able to turn a profit off of the number i was asking.

Already having done my homework, i knew there was no other 8 or 9 within 200 miles of my zipcode that i could find. I told him to search it out right there, which he did, and told him that there were 2 other dealerships in the Pittsburgh area that i could go to and that 25,500 was not a stretch. 2 days later i got a phone call saying that they were having a good month and were willing to take a "risk" and offered me 24,750 which i accepted.

A week later my 9 was listed by them at 28K. Funny thing is that it sold sometime within the next 3 weeks. When i went back for my shift knob that they had to order, it was already gone. I asked him if 25,500 was still way off the mark. He laughed (but didnt answer) and while laughing told me not to come back. I think he was half serious . In any case, i guess my point is that you can always bring a bit of exclusivity to the deal if you know what else is out there.

Trading in a car is like trying to sell parts on EvoM. You are going to get ridiculous, low ball offers.

I traded my evo 8 for my x. I took it to every dealership i could think of and they would only offer me 13k. The car had been wrecked pretty bad but everything was fixed. The clutch was almost completely done. I took it to the Mitsubishi dealership and they offered me 18k without even seeing or test driving the car. I didn't see it out on the lot for a week or so....they replaced the clutch and put it out on the lot. They had it listed for a price that was more than the original sticker price brand new. They ended up selling it a week or 2 later but i don't know what it sold for.......

Considering the NEW value is around $26k, asking that much with 9k miles used is a bit silly. You should have jumped at the $26,400 offer imo It's still very much a buyer's market, even in the use car game.
+1. I paid 31k for my loaded 08x mr exactly 10k off of sticker.

Well, I thought I'd see what would happen if I traded it in. I have kids in daycare, no time to mess with my car, so I wanted to trade the scalpel in for an appliance that would have a lower payment. I found a car, talked them $2500 off, and everything was looking good.

Then the hammer dropped. They offered me $22,500 in trade. I have an SSS with 9000 miles on it, and they are thousands lower than KBB, which is obviously meaningless in this economy.

It ticks me off, but I pulled my FS ad and threw a bunch of extra cash at the wifemobile instead, and should have her car paid off late this summer.

I guess I am married to this car for awhile until I can pay it way down, or just keep it and get over it. Because I am not giving it away.

Anyone else look at trading in their car and have a dealership hit them this low or lower?
Dude, even when the economy was good I had an offer on my old 2006 RS with 2,200 miles on it for 18,5... I just laughed at the guy and left... wound up selling it for I think 23,000. I got a little more than I owed for it, but nothing significant... you had one X and sold it for the 135i before right? Why sell it now?... you know you'll miss it again. Did you think about a refinance? I know that you likely had the 0%, but my payments were 516.00 a month and after refinance (I did 7 years for 5.49% my payments are now 371.00, which helped out A LOT, and I have a lot of months where I will make some extra case and double up on the payments, so i'm not actually paying that much more.. a lot of people think this is stupid, but if you love your car, or don't want to lose your a@@ on it, you do what you have to.

on a side note, the mileage is low and the economy is working it's way up.. i'd hold off as long as you can because you will eventually get what you want for it. We're still in that period of value not equalling out to what we owe.

Is that true in Ohio? I never knew you only paid tax on net difference, though I've never traded in a car.

Of course I like the Evo, but I have two little ones in daycare and am just at a crossroads in life where cars can't be a priority right now.

I'd fire sale it before I would refi out of 0% and extend the term. But I am not doing either one of those, as I will be able to sell it outright and throwing no cash at it by overpaying within 6mo - a year.

I'll be among the 4B11 pilots a little longer.
