I'd agree that you're unlikely to save money on a less expensive car...you'll just end up shelling out the difference in repairs instead of payments. Buying older vehicles only makes sense for people with mechanical ability and the free time to apply it to their car.

If the payment is really the issue then refinance the Evo.

$150 a month is that all you need?
Stop spending $5.00 a day on whatever you spend and keep the X.
Easy

I def wouldnt buy a GSX if you're going to be a family man. I would stick with a 4 door that you, the wife and kid(s) can get in and go wherever. On top of having the luxury to have your family with you, you will also be able to drive your car and enjoy it instead of taking whatever your wife drives.

Me personally I would look at a refinance on the X first if you truly like the car or if you want something else thats going to be even cheaper look at what was mentioned in like a regular WRX or Evo 8. Be cautious though of the Suby as 3rd gear is normally a major problem in them if they've been rode hard.

If you're not so much stuck on the performance side of a vehicle and want just an AWD car then you could look at some Audi's, Ford 500/Fusion, Dodge Charger/Magnum, Volvo, Saab or a slew of other vehicles from Subaru. Granted some of those are going to be a bit more than 10k but possibly find something in your budget with the right dealer wanting to work with you.

Good luck & congrats on the new arrival!

The only thing worth considering is a WRX for similar performance. Don't get the GSX; it's so slow.

I'm in the military and have 2 kids. I had a GSX for like 5yrs (1999-2004) and sold it once the first kids came for an Evo VIII. Then I was dumb and sold my modded VIII for a "family car" (Jetta) and hated it! It took a while but now I'm back in the X and would never do that again. I could have had my VIII paid for by now if I would have kept it, now I'm starting all over again. SUX.. Keep it.

I say go with an VIII. I loved mine. And you can get them for nothing now days. If you can get one and save $350 a month it'll be worth it as a family man. Or look at an old Audi S4. AWD. Nice. Fun to mod.

For $150 a month, chances are with an older car you are just going to be dumping that into issues with an older car anyways. Stick with a proven car (the one you maintained since new) and be glad you drive a safe car, both mechanically and peace of mind wise. Besides, what you lose on the trade in or sale, at least $3k less than you are hoping for, you more than make up the $150 loss. I see no benefit with the options you are looking at. Plus kids fit good in the X.

OP, what are you financed at and what rates are you seeing for refinancing? I wouldn't refi at anything above 7%.

What about other options like changing insurance providers/coverages?

At least you are taking your families needs into consideration, a new baby could use the $150 you save. You should sit down and think about this really good, you might end up selling the car and regret it later. I did that with my MR and could of kept my X, I sold the MR and now I miss it but still have the X. Unless you NEVER plan on getting another one sell it, but you will miss it, trust me.

My credit union = Penfed.org

Current APR % is 3.99 so check that out. It may help a lot.

Good luck, I've seen so many situations where friends and family sell a car after having a baby on the way. Its all downhill for your hobbies so keep what you can cause it will be a very long time before you get into another car like this.
