Thinking of coming back!

hey guys,

well, after a long time (too long) away from the EVO, i am seriously considering coming back to this amazing machine. right now i am considering an EVO X MR because i like all the extras and the SST transmission is perfect for what i want (auto for when i am just driving around town and great performance when i want to have fun). what i am looking for from you guys is some honest reviews of the X MR especially from people that came from the evo 8-9. how do you like the new MR? how do you like the SST? any info would be appreciated since general reviews often don't tell the real story.

SST is insanely good. I didnt expect it to compare to the feel of a 5 speed. Please try it at a dealer in a Ralliart or MR. I loved it.

my buddy says, if you close your eyes, you would think the sst is a manual, just the smoothest manual out there. i like my mr-t first one tho so i cant comment on the rest. But no rattles, or probs at 5000k/m so far

1/4'd 20 times now, no overheats.

yeah the car will be my DD and will only see track in maybe 4-5 track days per year. also, i understand that the new car is not as easy to mod but to be honest, my car modding pretty much consists of a stage 2 (IC, exhaust, flash etc..) and a lot of suspension mods. power wise, i don't ever see myself going with more than 350whp.

You not be unhappy as soon as some people crank the tcu this car will really move like stink. Now got something to think about if you worried about warrenty if u get to happy with the mods to early. good luck

You can search for all my comments regarding the MR vs GSR in the other threads. In a nutshell, if you have mastered the art of manual with revmatching, heel toeing, double clutching, then the MR won't give you that sense of absolute feel. Unlike others, I have found that the GSR is better in the city ESP around parking lots and acceleration after almost coming to a complete stop. The MR is better when you're racing and pushing the limits as it'll never misshift. I suggest trying both out first.

i agree with the above poster, although double clutching is almost a dead art with all the new tech and synchros.

i drive an evo 8, but went out in a buddies new MR. tranny felt almost like the ferrari f430 tranny. for me, not my cup of tea. sounds like you dont know how to drive stick bc it revs up waiting to catch each time you start from a stop. to me, kinda annoying to have it rev up each time you try to drive, considering in the end it is still an AUTO.

But other than that, the shifts are extremely smooth and much faster than any manual. take some getting used to, but fun nonetheless. sounds like it would be a good choice for you.

best of luck on what you decide, and happy holidays

Hopefully your return to an Evo is more enjoyable than the return of the Boondock Saints to the silver screen.

That latest sequel was the worst turd of a movie I've seen in a long time.

"It's a manual with no clutch pedal."

I came from the 8 to a ralliart just because of the SST. I have the most fun when I leave it in AUTO SPORT mode and just concentrate on driving/steering fast. The tranny up-shifts and downshifts much faster than I could with my twin disc evo 8. The only thing it cannot do is launch hard as a manual and add unlimited power to it.
The best feeling from my 5spd EVO were the crazy launches with 400ft lbs of torque. I really miss that, but I enjoy ripping through the cars just as much. With the SST its a lot faster now!

Which comes to the con of the SST. Normal driving there is always a lag in engagement. It feathers the clutch in first way to much. The SST does not start in first better than a manual/clutch and human foot. You get used to this, but it is annoying. In the evo I could just release the clutch at 1k rpm fully engaged and just drive off no lag. The SST is going to rev it high and slowly engage til you moving than gradually fully engage it. Kind of like how you teach someone how to drive stick the first time. (rev to 2500 and slowly release the clutch til you feel your moving.)

To sum it up. SST is a new manual driver when starting in first and its a professional racer after first gear. You still get the EVO handling in the MR too. Plus you have launch control.
Someone who came from an EVO 8 to X MR to a RA said the RA w/o launch control launched much harder than the MR with launch control. (1.7 60's). To me that is perfectly fine.

SST shift amazing it's aboslutely unbelievable. I have both an 08 WW MR and a 10 GSR. You can't go wrong with either.. but if you're looking to DD with light track use HONESTLY, my MR makes it around the track a lot faster or at least it feels like it.

I have the best of both worlds in my over crowded packed garage, one EVO 8 MR, one EVO X MR

this first difference I felt was the float feel ride compared to the 8, I guess im accustomed to it now because i don't feel it as much.
The first gear delay just SUCKS *****, but I was told a simple flash can fix it.
In sport D you can swear your driving a stick EVO
in SS using the paddles I can swear im driving my 8 before the mods.
if your tired of the clutch, a little more lazy, love technology then EVO MR FTW, or if you still love the clutch, not as lazy and still love technology get the GSR FTW. Either way you cant go wrong.
