To keep or sell?

Ok, here's some quick background info. I sold my truck in Nov to pick up a 2010 VW Golf TDI because I am doing TONS of driving for school and work. I drive 110 miles per day for work 6 months out of the year and I school in MI. Ended up watching the Top Gear episode on the Evo X too many times and stopped by a Mitsu dealer on the way to the VW dealer. After the test drive (bad decision), I ended up buying it. Payed $28k before tax with 17k miles on it. It now has 27k miles on it and I've owned it for about 8 months. Part of me LOVES the car (the part when I'm driving it for fun) and the other half just wants to get rid of it and not have to worry about it. Right now I am driving my dads spare car to work so I dont put a million miles on the Evo, but he needs it back soon. Been looking at TDI's again and the dealer said they would give me $22k on trade, which is roughly $23,5 if I were to sell it privatly because of the tax savings. Anyone want to throw in their input on what I should do. Should I just drive the living hell out of it (will have over 100k miles in 2 years probly) or get rid of it now and enjoy 40mpg? Ughhhh I've been thinking about this for weeks now, making me go crazy!

You would probably save more money just driving it and not even hitting boost. Or go spend 800 and buy a 89 civic.

Seeing as you live in WI (I'm in NE OHIO) I'd get a rusty 4CYL. Jeep or pickup. Something you can throw a nice stereo in, get good milage, and still romp in the snow.

+1 for a reliable beater.

That trade value is not that good, and any Volkswagen (even an R20 Golf not seen on these shores) would be a catastrophic downgrade for any performance car enthusiast.

I looked into something similar, and although I would love to sell my car for financial reasons, it just doesn't make any sense on paper, particularly since it is 0% money.

VWs have electronic gremlins, and the 2010s have all kinds of mechanical maladies too, including rear washer sprayers that continually drip, door sills that don't line up, it goes on and on. Do yourself a favor and run from das auto. Keep your Evo and get a reliable $5k beater, hunker down and pay them both off.

No sense in owning an Evo if you can't afford gas.

I don't think this has anything to do with him being able to afford the gas.

Well he is talking about looking at a TDI and wanting to get 40mpg. If gas is not the issue, then why on earth would anyone choose to drive a TDI over an Evo.

Do what I did and buy a Mitsubishi Starion ESiR. Just as much fun as an Evo and it can make some serious power with bolt ons. You can find decent Starions for $3500 and lower. Keep the EVO if you can and don't compromise yourself from owning a turbo when buying the Starion.

I understand where you guys are coming from.... but here are some things I have put a lot of thought into.

-Evo is payed off, so thats not an issue
-Why own a car that you never drive
-Its more than the gas thats the issue, and Evo costs a lot of $$$$ to maintain
-Owning 2 vehicles = 2 times insurance and no way to have 2 cars at school

Dude, it its paid off, just deal with it. You will lose your tail on trade. It might not get great fuel ecomomy, but in 3 years, it will be worth a ton more than that VW, which will depreciate like mad. Evos hold their value reasonably well. The bulk of the depreciation has already hit, you need to keep your car or you will regret it. Trust me, I have loads of regrets.

If you travel 110 miles a day, it is 3300 miles a month. Yearly you will accumulate almost 40000 miles. A tank normally runs 250 miles so that means you will have to refuel your evo 150 times. Gasoline alone will cost you 4500 a year.
I think it's a good idea to either get a cheap and reliable car or to sell it since 4500 on gasoline alone is a hefty amount of money.
I would just buy a prius for now. When I have more money, get your evo again or something better. Think about how much money you will save!
Owning and paying for two cars when you are going to school are not smart..
be wise about your choice.
