Lancers and Evo X's get top safety reading..

Just incase your wife or gf is giving you grief, here is another thing in favor of the X. Just saw this on the Highway Safety website. Just another reason to buy an X.

http://www.iihs.org/news/default.html#072210

"July 22

Mitsubishi Lancer earns the 2010 Top Safety Pick award

After earning a good rating for rollover protection, the 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer earns the Institute's Top Safety Pick award. The Lancer, a small car, is the first Mitsubishi to qualify for the top safety designation since the Institute implemented the new rollover test.

Top Safety Pick recognizes the vehicles that earn the highest rating for front, side, rollover, and rear crash protection, and that have electronic stability control, which is standard on the Lancer.

Based on research of real-world crashes, the Institute evaluates rollover protection using a roof strength test. In this test a metal plate is pushed against one corner of a vehicle's roof at a constant speed. The maximum force sustained by the roof before 5 inches of crush is compared to the vehicle's weight to find the strength-to-weight ratio. This is a good assessment of vehicle structural protection in rollover crashes. Good rated vehicles have roofs that can withstand a force equal to at least 4 times the vehicle's weight. For comparison, the current federal standard is 1.5 times weight."

Kind of a 180 from the last generation Lancer. Good to see that the extra weight was actually put to good use I guess.

a honda s2000 crashed into my 09 RA at about 50mph. it totalled the car, but i can vouch for the car being able to really absorb the blow.

Uh, the IIHS website does not mention the Evo X at all in their article, and their test vehicle was a 2008 Lancer ES that has a steel roof, unlike the Evo, that has a lighter and weaker aluminum roof that probably won't hold up as well in a rollover scenario.

So yeah.. try not to flip your X. At least til they post test results, lol

Btw, this news was a repost from a couple weeks ago..

Just the roof skin is aluminum, the rest is steel just like the Lancer ES.

well regardless of this test, it is well documented that evo x is a lot safer than previous evos. So at the very least we know the weight went into something that could one day save your life.

Sounds about right. Also found this info from the AMS carbon fiber roof thread (LINK)...

So I guess we're almost as safe as the ES.. as long as we don't roll the car over onto a boulder or something else that could punch in the roof skin, lol.

The structure on the new lancers is very solid, unlike the old ones...
