Tire Issue
Agreed, while you might be able to get away with a similar tire, why try? The residual risk is so high. I wouldn't even just replace the one tire unless the other three are virtually new. The tread depth needs to match reasonably well, and that's assuming an identical tire. If you do choose to run a different tire and jack your transfer case, please keep me in mind. I'll take it off your hands and have it rebuilt, as I'd like a spare...

If you go to Tirerack.com, look up the brand then model of tire. When you choose the model it'll give you several tabs. Click on the tab that says Spec. Scroll down to the specific tire size your looking for (ex. 245/40/18). To the right it'll give you every single detail about the tire from UTQG to Revs per Mile in that size.
my evo has 7000 miles on it and 2 weeks ago i drove over a nail. The nail was too close to the edge to repair, so I had it replaced. It costs me $365 at the dealer, and I was shocked too.
I thought they were ripping me off, but I saw the same tire on tirerack costs $360.
I asked the dealership if I had to replace all 4 tires, and they said no. In reality, when I look at the new tire vs. the 3 old tires with 7000 miles on them, there's not much difference. The stock tire has minimal tread to begin with.
