clutch depressed grind...

I just grinded 1st with the clutch fully depressed against the floor. It disengaged 3rd, but when I shifted into 1st @ like 5mph to juggle a stop sign on a hill, it wouldn't get into gear, only halfway into the gate. My foot was all the way to the floor as this was the first thing that came to my head after realizing what happened. I didn't really let the car warm up in 20 degree weather for more than 30 seconds for a quick 2 block trip to wawa.

I know I need to pay special attention now, but what can the issue be? First time it grinded. Othertime it was just the usual cold notchy gearbox getting into gear. Tested for slips and clutch friction and it is excellent. Synchro going bad? Fluke freak weather accident? Synchro wasn't properly lubed up? Return of the massiah? I'll probably rock the gate between 1-2 before taking off and giving it a few min to warm up.

rev match or very lightly push into first with the clutch out as you gradually bring up the revs.

It's because you were going 5 mph. First gear is meant for a FULL STOP (or rev match as he said). But if you didn't know that to begin with, you may know what or how to blip the throttle.

I was just rolling along off 3rd with no revs and then tried to catch the car by putting it into first.
Yeah I think that will probably do it. Maybe I should clutch in sooner, move the shifter to first, then continue, to hold in the clutch until I'm about to start rolling back. Check. I am still working on rev-matching. I rarely try to match 1st from 2nd as it is probably the hardest to master without the jolt and not many situations call for it. Usually, I've been pretty good with my method, but this time I was late. First time it happened and it gave me quite a scare. Thanks guys! I'll work on it!

I'd suggest never down-shifting from 1st to 2nd unless you REALLY NEED TO.. like in snow or something.. but that's just me. IMO, 1st gear gets beat up enough from starting off from a stop.. you don't need to add more insult to the gear by down-shifting to 1st from 2nd.. 2nd gear will still slow you down to 5-10mph without stalling out.

Definitely learn to rev match.. it is very useful

1st gear is meant to be engaged from a full stop. Even at 5 mph I go at second gear, vibration is totally okay.

U shouldn't downshift to 1st unless you absolutely need to.

In your situation I wouldn't have done first I would have done 2nd but not fully release the clutch pedal.

I didn't release the clutch pedal.
It was all the way in and the shifter started grinding halfway into the gate when downshifting.

No revs while the tires were still spinning was the issue I think. I hope.

^^ the question was answered. it has nothing to do with rev matching or blipping the throttle or the way you engage/depress your clutch.

First gear is used for full stops only. Period.

I had the same problem last year... Around winter time so I thought I broke the tranny( first manual car) anyway I took it to dealership so what they call evo specialist could look at the problem , tech could just told me never to shift to first unless I'm at dead stop but no they have to call service rep from mitsubishi and end up have my car for over a week. The result of the problem is normal and told me don't shift to first unless dead stop.

This is sort of amazing.

I'm not sure where some people here learned how to drive stick but this is DRIVING 101. You can't blame the service rep for that. He has to check everything out since YOU insisted there is a problem and he has to give the situation it's due. Think of a doctor who hears from a patient "I think there's something wrong".

It isn't anyone else's fault that you thought the car was broken because you shifted into first while moving. OMG another reason Evos should never be purchased used.
