There is no clutch pedal with the TC-SST - I'll describe what you do gel.

You can leave it in automatic mode, which will change gears for you, or you can leave it in manual mode, and change gears yourself. It is good in the sense that unlike some other manual systems, in that in manual mode it will not shift for you, you are in complete control of the shifting with one exception being it will prevent over/under-revving the engine if it thinks there was an error.

There are two ways to manually shift, one is with paddle shifters on the steering wheel, but you can also shift with the floor mounted gear lever (pull for upshifts, push for downshifts).

Really the only thing it doesn't give you is the clutch - it's up to you whether the clutch pedal is worth the trade offs. I really can't stress the test drive enough.

The SS package is the only one I'd get, anytime I've had a sunroof I used it maybe twice a year.(anytime I leave it open it thunderstorms) You can add your own sound deadening material if you really need to for much less.

Learning to drive a manual on the Tc will be fine.

I hope you get more than $9 for your current vehicle. Think about selling it rather than trading it in.

Definitely get a clear bra the day you buy the car!

i've driven both the MR and the GSR and i absolutely love the GSR.

i learned to drive manual in a 325is 95' and ever since then it's been a breeze. i drive a 07's 350z now with an even softer clutch and i love it. however in July, i'm changing over to the X, just waiting on that 50% downpayment .

also on the manual part of the MR, if im not mistaken, if you are in that mode, if you come to a stop it automatically downshifts you to neutral if im not mistaken... no imbarassing stall lol.

As for learning manual in the TC, i would say thats a great car for learning in. but once you learn how to do it, it's almost second nature. took me a day to get down the basics, and from there your abilities just grow. just know this... lots of cussing is involved in the first 4 hours or so lol.

If you are concerned about negotiating, my experience is that you are much better off finding a dealer that has what you want on the lot rather than trying to negotiate on something that they are ordering or trading for. I bought mine at a dealer a couple of hours away and saved $5K compared to what my local dealer wanted with the exact same options. It usually pays to shop around.

As many have said, the model/options really come down to what you want and what you plan to do with the car. Get what you want - not what someone else wants.

Yea youre best off shopping around then dealing with just one dealership. I went to like 3 or 4 different dealerships when i first brought my Si Sedan a couple years back. Now im getting ready to do the same when i go to trade in the si for Evo X.
I brought my Si without really knowing how to drive stick, took a good friend with me to walk me through it and just went with it. after a day or so you'll be just fine!

I'm currently in the same boat OP. I'm looking to buy a new X because I just want something new. I currently have an 04 BBY VIII with only 40k miles on the clock, but it's lost that magic feeling to me. I'll be using this next car a lot more, thus the updated interior, fresh car (maint is creeping up on normal wear parts in my current Evo), and it'll probably help rekindle that car-lover feeling in me.

My current "needs" as I told my dealer is it has to have HIDs, upgraded stereo, and the wing, with no body kit non-sense as I'd prefer a nice CF lip down the road. I have a sunroof and leather in my current car, and do use it a bit, but I probably can live without it. My gf just bought an Acura RDX, and we have pets, so if I don't have leather for my dog to scratch up, that's a plus too I suppose.

I'm going with a GSR for sure as I do enjoy modding my cars, and from what I gather, the 5-speed takes what you throw at it, while the auto is a "press-your-luck" type situation.

The only thing that worries me about a new Evo is the build quality of the interior and exterior. With my garage kept 04, it's one of the worst quality cars I've ever owned. The paint is crap (no clear on side view mirrors even), the wing has faded on me (or sandblasted basically heh) in the past, the Brembo's clear coat came off and needed to be redone, the paint is way too soft and thin and scratches easily, the interior scratched way too easily as well, which is a shame. My other option was an STI, but their paint is certainly no better, so it's out the window.

I'm going to drive around to check out how much head room I have with and without a sunroof as that's a concern as I'm 6'2-6'3. And I would like to see the leather I guess just to make sure (i heard the cloth seats are better now in the newer X's though).

So just shop around. It can be hard to negotiate, and tiresome, but it's worth saving any money you can these days. Let your dealer know you're shopping around and let them fight for your business as well by competing for price of the car, your trade value, and finding the best loan rates. Good luck! The Evo is the most incredible car-to-smile factor there is. If you live in harsh climates like I do, they only get even more fun when in the snow to boot.

I don't care what people say, if you're a car guy, and you need something livable on a daily basis, and need it to be good in all types of climates, then there is no better point A to point B car out there in the world for the price.

Whew. Seems like getting an Evo X is going to be quite a task. I can't seem to find ANYONE within a 250 mile radius that deals with them directly. What extremes do you have to go through to get an Evo? I'm in Kentucky and my local dealership can order them but how in the hell would I go about test driving one? I don't want to buy a car without driving it first. Will it really require a flight to somewhere to test drive and buy this car? What have some of you had to do to get your Evo?

Thanks for everyone's input! Very good information!

And you could sell your car privately and get more for it.

Well, my local dealership is offering me a decent trade-in including $500 loyalty. Also, they're willing to work with me on my pay off. So that's a big factor too. I still owe more money on this car than it's worth. So a HUGE part of this is trying to finance me into a livable situation.

And the time that it'll take to sell my car would be a pretty big factor. I don't know how easy it would be and how long it would take.
