First post first question !
Hi,
Just got a 2011 Graphite Grey GSR last week from South Coast Mitsubishi. Anyway I have been lurking on this site for a while and after getting rid of my 07 STI last year I finally took the plunge and switched to the Evo side. (I have the same screen name over iwsti)
Anyway, before I post pictures and stuff, I have a 3 questions regarding the transmission:
1. Difficult to get into first gear from stand still. I have to clutch in and out a few times to get it going. Usually pretty bad in the morning and ease up along the drive a bit by not by much.
2. Been double clutching so far since getting into 2nd is a quite notchy. I searched quite a bit here and people seems to agree that this is normal and gets better as the car breaks in.
3. Hard to get into reverse from stand still. Have to shift into 3rd or 5th first.
Sounds normal ? Should I take it to the dealer ? On my STI I never had any of these problems even when it was new. I have about 100 miles on the evo now.
Thanks in advance for any replies !

I personally got mine used with 5k miles. I noticed the same thing. I did some searching and basic concensus was the same. Change the fluid. I did this and also added shift base bushings and notchiness is not totally gone but extremely better. Since you have only 100 miles, let it get broke in first. It will take a little bit for the gears to mesh good, since from factory the teeth on the gears are rough, not like getting it rebuild and having them smooth all the teeth out. Just hang in there, you should notice some improvement. Also the clutches on the evos are typically stiffer than normal cars from factory. You'll get used to it. Congrats on your new buy.
Yea its normal. I don't know why the X's have a notchy transmission, but everyone has it.
Wait until atleast around 1000 miles. It should improve SOME.
At about 2k miles, I replaced my stock shifter and stock shifter bushings with the TWM shifter & bushings. It made it 200x's better. I would look them up. All my notchiness went away with that install and it made it shift SOOO much better.
And +1 on the new trans fluid, but I would wait a few thousand miles before you do that.

Mine has 48k on it and the trans is still notchy and sometimes difficult like that, putting it in first can be difficult sometimes, but reverse is where the problem is mostly. Just throw it in first and let off the clutch a bit, no problems after that.
These are all normal. I am at 30k with my 2010 GSR and still have some notchy shifting, trouble getting into first and reverse. Let the car warm up in the morning and you should be fine. Welcome to the world of driving an Evo. Much like your girl you will have some problems with her but you still enjoy driving her hard.
Ya notchy transmissions are a pain. Had the same problem, but it gets easier to shift. Also a short throw helps a lot in that problem. i also noticed when i got my new exhaust the shifting got easier also it seamed to bog less and rev up faster and made my DD alot easier to drive.
