Reliability for Mitsubishi depends mostly on the way you treat the car. If you are only doing basic mods and know how to drive properly, the Evo X should last you.

Looks are subjective for both cars. STIs generally have to be seen in person to fall in love/hate with them. I think the sedan looks just fine though the back is a little "spaceshippy". The hatchback has absolutely grown on me and I believe the best view is from the back to show off the muscular "hips".

The Evo X has always looked great to me and I've always believed Mitsubishi makes the better looking car. Stock, the Evo X will give you that "boost" feel whereas the STI has a more linear and "civilized" feel. When you go Stage 2 on the STI as you describe, it'll feel even better. And yes, the Subaru boxer rumble is quite alluring.

If you are in a position to buy a new car, here's an idea: It's already March going on April. If you wait a couple more months (which you will) PAST your truck payments, you'll have a chance to see the 2012 Evo X and the 2012 STI, not to mention the 2012 Impreza.

Though only minor changes apply for the Evo X, you never know if they might modify something (like for the 2011, having heated seats, leather and moonroof as options). For the 2012 STI, they may even apply other changes.

And of course, the 2012 Impreza will be BRAND NEW giving very subtle clues for what the 2013 STI might look like.

Personally, I'm waiting for the 2013 Evo/STIs and if I like either one, I'll be the first at port to buy one. If I don't like them, I can always get the 2012 Evo X or 2012 STI.
