Cobb stage 2 or 400s

Hi everybody,

Basically i want to mod my Evo x (I cant imagine how many times that has been written before!) I wanted just a general feedback on weather I should go for the Cobb stage 2 kit then consider the upgrade to the 400s kit in the future or if i shud just go all out and get the 400s straight away.

I know that both these kits will make a huge difference in my currently bare stock evo. My car is still in the run in stages and wont be putting anything on it until i have completely run it in. I also didnt want to do single mods on my car i want to buy everything then put the car in to the garage for a weekend and have it all done at once.

The car will be used as a daily driver and occasional track days. It is my first evo and first tuning project.

Anyone have experiance with these kits? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance

You'd probably save a few buck doing it all the first time.

Yeh thats true, especially living in the middle east means i have to order everything from the states. So having to ship all of it twice would bump up the price. Also would i be right in thinking that if i ordered the full 400s kit then i could just use the TBE, Downpipe, HFC and access port without using the green turbo, fuel pump, big injectors etc, then it would be the same as stage 2?

If you have the money, then go ahead and buy everything at once. However to get used to the power, just mod to stage 2 at first to get used to the power...then once you get bored bump it up to the beast.

If you install stage 2 first, then you will continue to use the same parts and you could just add the missing pieces to go to the 400s level later.

I would say if you plan on doing it yourself, do stage 2 first, then later add the 400s upgrade kit. But, if you are going to have a shop do it, do it all at once because it wil minimize downtime.

Just make sure it's a very reputable shop that knows how to install cams, because the little bucket adjusters must be sized correctly. Also, you will have to contact Cobb to get the 400s map sent to you. It will be even better if the installer knows how to tune with the AP.

I had it all done at once on my new car then discovered the installer had the wrong map on it. Another minor miscue was that the cranking enrichment had to be adjusted because the car had problems starting when hot. All good now and I like the power!

Thanks a lot for your guys advice. Thats great that i can buy the full kit then can just use the components from the kit to make it stage 2, then add the bigger turbo/cams etc once i tame the power of stage 2. The car has below 200miles on it at the moment so i still have to get used to the car once its run in and a can really open her up, but im ordering the kit now to have it ready to go on.

The garage I will take it to is the dealer for COBB ap's where i live and im sure they will have the correct maps for it.

Thanks again!

One other thing: when you change the OE Turbo to the FP-Green, it's a great opportunity to use the AMS downpipe, that has the integrated Turbo Adapter aka O2 Housing, instead of the Cobb Downpipe. Cobb might be willing to work with you to subtract the cost of their downpipe and replace it with the AMS one. That's what I did.

Yup, but Cobb's bolt on to the restrictive OE Turbo Adapter. The AMS downpipe is cast and has a huge bellmouth which bolts on straight to the Turbo.

Look at the images and you will see what I mean.

Would you mind giving your opinion on the Cobb stage 2 kit and the SMS stage 2 kit? Would you recommend one over the other? Because at first I wanted everything ams but thought the Cobb 400s was perfect because it's a big step up but not going too crazy too quick.

i think you meant AMS, but either way i prefer cobb. Their products are high quality and they are coming out with a lot of new parts soon for the x to include a FMIC. I like to keep all my mods as close as possible to the same company.

Lol yes I did mean ams - iPhone at it again I also want to stick with as much of the same brand parts. Cobb is the better choice I think as well as no supplier of any ams products here.

Also lol about the protest comment! It's no where near as bad as shown on the news I've been here through the whole thing. It's all safe.
