Aem afr gauge
Aem afr gauge
So I finally have my afr gauge installed. I was monitoring it while I was driving earlier and for some reason, the afr sometimes is at 15. And when I'm driving it goes off the range...meaning it goes way lean. I see that it goes lean when I'm just coasting.
Ok, here's a scenario. 5th with gas or throttle position constant, it's at around 11-12, but I take my foot off the gas pedal, it goes red and doesn't show up the reading. Or, when I'm driving I just coast, the rpm goes down, then when the mivec cuts off, the afr does the same thing, goes red and afr doesn't read.
Is this normal?
WOT, it's at 10-11. So I'm not that worried about that.
Long story short, I should only be worried about lean conditions when I put load right?

thats normal. When you let off the gas, the engine isnt taking any fuel or air, so your sensor isnt reading anything in your pipes.
Do you have a tune? im still on stock tune and when im wot my wideband reads 10 flat at 5000rpm, so by the time its at 7000rpm its in the 9's...which is normal. Just wondering if u have a tune since u r around the 11's at wot.

As people are saying, totally normal. Sounds healthy. Here's what to watch for:
1) WOT (sounds like you're seeing it healthy now anyways)
2) Partial throttle load conditions ( 11-15 isnt bad, remember 14.7 is stoichiometric for gasoline)
3) idle. Idle shouldn't creep up, and stay above 15.5 or so. You'll always see it oscillate a little and that's normal, but you're looking for it persisting up high.

9:1 A/F is TOO rich even for WOT (for gasoline, not quite rich enough for E85). X's have a terrible factory tune on the error side of rich, but it can wash walls. If only Mitsu could approve people getting their X's tuned to fix the broken factory tune

Partial, it's at 13-14
Idle, it goes 15.5

Pretty much hit it spot on.
Exactly, the evo's enemy is the sti which pushes out like 14hp more? If mitsubishi changed the tune a tiny bit and made it abit leaner...im not saying make it 11.9-12.0 at WOT but like 10.5-10.8 that will give it the bit more power to match the sti.
Yeah, my previous car was a 05' STi that I had tuned from a local tuner I like. Personally I think the only reason the STi feels faster, is the torque from the 2.5L. Just "feels" more impressive. Also, the turbo on the STi just lags a little more. The EvoX's boost comes on really smooth.
