Quick Question for You guys!! :)

Alright.. So I currently got a Cobalt SS.. and I want to get a Lancer Evolution because I hear the Insurance on STI's is nuts.

But the amount of different trims on the Lancers's are crazy..

I see Lancer Evolution, Lancer Ralliart, lancer evolution gsr etc..

If you guys could push me in the right direction it would be awesome!

I am 20 years old (male) , not interested in getting killed with insurance but want a reliable, fun car.

Thanks alot guys.

My friends wagon WRX is only 95 bucks ($25 bucks cheaper than mine). They consider it a wagon / family vehicle is what he told me.

GSR would be the standard package which is what I would recommend. Everything after that just has exterior, drivetrain, interior options.

Are you considering a newer (2008+) evo? I'm just guessing, but I think the evo and the sti will be in the same range if not higher with insurance.

Here is a quick comparison of the models:

and

The majority of evo owner are evo owners because they wanted to be evo owners. There was no consideration for the other lancer models.

Enjoy your search.

Lancer evolution = series name/trim name

Lancer ralliart = baby sister of the evo. Has the same 4b11t engine code but with different internals, lower rear wing, smaller intercooler, different path uicp and licp which equate to less hp/tq. It's a step up from the base non-turbo fwd lancer.

Lancer evolution gsr = "base" evolution. 5spd manual. Same engine as the mr edition. Less options than an mr, but u can get it as well if u pay extra for the premium package.

Lancer evolution mr = "upgraded" evolution. 6spd sst auto, more amenities than gsr that r "stock"/standard.

As for ur age, there's really nothing u can do as far as insurance. Also, insurance "might" consider it as a "family" car coz of the 4doors. The break that u will surely get from insurance is the safety package, coz of all the airbags it has.

U will save some money if u buy the gsr, but really, it's an opinion of what u want...more amenities (leather seats, etc) and driving auto, or less amenities and driving stick.

As for me, I went with the gsr coz I like driving stick shift. And as far as options go, I knew I was gonna change out the interior and exterior anyway so I went with the cheaper route. No reason to buy leather seats and nav when I'm gonna change it anyways.

Panda Stunter pretty much summed it up.

The insurance for me is worse on the Evo than an STi by a few bucks -- like 40/6 months.

A C5 corvette will be cheaper to buy and cheaper to insure. Just saying.

Get the GSR model. My insurance is extremely low. Not even close to $100 a month

Your insurance rates are really subjective. I pay about $55/month for my EVO, a few dollars more a month than my GTI. But I'm 29, married, and have multiple cars and homeowners insurance all through the same policy. I also have nothing on my driving record.

That being said, OP, don't let a small difference in insurance deter you. I would imagine that depending on where you live, what insurance company you have, etc., they will be all about the same.

I bought a GSR. My VIII was a GSR. Decide if you want SST auto or manual transmission.

If you want the auto SST, then you should consider the Ralliart or MR. The Ralliart looks like a pretty solid performer especially with a few upgrades but won't handle as well as the Evo. I liken the Ralliart to a WRX(non-STI).

Like someone posted above, there are some additional upgrades to the MR, but the major difference is the transmission. Also, you will save a little bit up front by going with the GSR.

Moodster - so, you're not interested in doing any research yourself? All the information you've asked about is covered every which way possible on this forum. The trim levels are covered on Mitsu's website, Edmunds, Car and Driver, etc, etc.

This thread is closed. Spend some time informing yourself instead of relying on everyone to do it for you.
