Only need "M+S" for CalTrans
M+S tires are not in the same league as a "Snowflake" rated tire in a true alpine environment/storm etc. But they will get CalTrans by if properly selected, and you ca runn them for a couple of months on dry tarmac OK and Waaaaay better than runnning Summers up the mountain (chains or not) or Blizzaks in SoCal.
For the EVO, Dunlop 3D or Conti DWS are two tires to look at for this purpose.
<FYI in OR, UT, CO etc you need Snowflake in the mountain areas for chain control.>
...
Types of Chain Controls:
During the winter months, motorists may encounter traction chain controls in the mountain areas within California. When chain controls are established, signs will be posted along the road indicating the type of requirement. There are three requirements in California.
Requirement One (R1): Chains, traction devices or snow tires are required on the drive axle of all vehicles except four wheel/ all wheel drive vehicles.
Requirement Two (R2): Chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles except four wheel/ all wheel drive vehicles with snow-tread tires on all four wheels.
(NOTE: Four wheel/all wheel drive vehicles must carry traction devices in chain control areas.)
Requirement Three (R3): Chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles, no exceptions.
Snow-tread Tires:
The California vehicle code section 558 defines a snow-tread tire as follows, " A 'Snow-tread tire' is a tire which has a relatively deep and aggressive tread pattern compared with conventional passenger tread pattern". Snow-tread tires can be identified by examining the sidewall of the tire where the letters MS, M/S, M+S or the words MUD AND SNOW have been stamped into the sidewall.

The nice thing about the Contis is that they look the part. It's an all season tire that looks a lot like a snow tire. Given that, you're right! I might be able, with a tire like that to run all year long without having to change them out! That's great, because it'll save me $1,000!
I still need to carry chains in the car just to show the police, and for the rare occasion when CalTrans requires them on ALL VEHICLES no exceptions. I supposed I'll need 4 chains though (AWD). Right?
I know Thule makes some nice chains that fit around the tread only and don't touch the wheels. Regular chains scratch wheels.
I am interested in most of your choices and understand them all, except the Boss. I've only driven a regular 5.0, and the power delivery is nice. I know the Boss will hang with an M3 on track, but they feel so big and nasty. They are fast cars, not handling cars.
I can't fathom liking or wanting an Elise and even breathing the word Mustang. The Elise is a total handling purist car, followed by the Vette, the Evo (which at least gets four doors and AWD for utility).
Drive an Elise and a C6 again, think of the cars modded and what you want the most. The Evo is great all around for sure. Good luck.

So I'm at the dealership and I'm looking at an 2010 with 5k miles. Cloth seats. Rockford system. Thats it. Salesperson went down to $29,000 but when I said no, they started asking me how much I wanted to pay. I said 25k. Of course, low. What do you guys think?
Not jazket, but.. I have a little under $3k in "performance" mods and it is night and day.
Mods are:
ARK performance testpipe & catback exhaust
upper & lower intercooler piping
drop-in air filter
turbo inlet pipe
H&R lowering springs
Cobb Access-port running the stage 2 tune
TWM short shifter
TWM shifter bushings
Car drives amazing and pulls hard. Total blast to drive!
GL with your decision.

but with the AP's dyno tool it says 350hp 334lb-tq... I assume this is all crank hp...Regardless of the numbers... the car feels completely different... like the way it should be stock! speeds between 70 and 110mph come in so much easier than stock

I'll tune soon and post real #s... but the AP is $600... u can grab it used for 400 bucks from the sales section... some guys go and tune at the shop and no longer use the AP then they decide to sell it
Look here:

Lowest is an SE (TC-SST/auto) $28,500 with 9k Miles
what is it? GSR or MR/SE?
I know I'm low-balling hard. But actually, it wasn't me. The salesperson's closer made a mistake and was trying to get a "yes" out of me. So he tried the old trick of "would you take it today for 25k?"
Bottom line, it's $29,000. I'm walking for now. I'll keep it pending. I'm not too hot on the black color anyway.

Yea I hear ya. 29k for a 2010 sounds like a pretty good deal to me. Although you could almost buy a 2011 with 0% for that from south coast mitsubishi. I think I saw they were selling the base model for 30999 or something like that? Could be wrong. Look them up in the vendor spot on this forum. A lot of members have got their cars from them and had them shipped. They prolly have some used ones too.
It's a good deal, but not enough to get me over the fact that I don't want a black one, that I want leather seats and not cloth, and that the Rockford Fosgate option is not at the top of my list. I'd rather have the SatNav and do audio myself.
Also... That's $4K under a brand new 2012 and maybe only $1K or $2K under the price of a brand new 2011. Plus, I really like the padded doors and faux leather door panels on the 2012. Plus, the black cabin trim is better than the faux carbon fiber cabin trim that's on the 2010. Plus, at only 5K miles, the tires on this 2010 were nearly halfway shot anyway. I would need new ones in another 4 or 5K miles.
I'll look up Southcoast. I think they are somewhat close to me. But in the meantime, the main reason I couldn't pull the trigger so fast is I have to test drive my other option, the Corvette. I'll be back with a report...

BTW, she test drove the Evo as well. She wants me to buy that instead of the Vette. I'll have her drive the Vette too and see.
Hey man, thanks for the post! Actually, there's really good advice in there. Definitely helpful.
In fact, you kind of hit the nail on the head with "Comparing the vette to the eve seems hard at first, but I think at a close look at what you want will solve the problem." That is exactly what I'm going to do.
Last night, I spent 3 hours at Barnes & Noble reading about cars and thinking. I got to the conclusion that after all this research, if were to go blindfolded and pick between a Corvette and an Evo, I wouldn't be making a mistake either. Their are plenty of pros and cons to both.
So, what I going to do is draw up a little list with both cars and list the pros and cons of both cars from my perspective. Stuff like
2 seats vs 5 seats
AWD vs RWD
Youthful image vs more grownup image
Track & rally capable vs track only
i4 sound vs V8
Insurance price comparison
Resale value
Cost to mod and work on it
etc
etc
etc
Then I'll draw up a conclusion.
In the meantime, I'm going to take my wife to the Mitsu dealer to see and drive a GSR.
Oh, BTW, I used to like the Mazdaspeed 3, but there are just many more cars I like better. For example, I love the look of the 2011 and 2012 MX-5. But my wife will kick my *** if I buy one. She says it's too girlie. I beg to differ. But for $30k, I'd still rather buy a Vette or an Evo. Once those new MX-5's start to age and drop to $22K it might be much more worth it.

Perfect! Sounds like you have your ducks in order. Lol on that I sell mazdas so I know exactly what you mean ( hence me getting an EVO, not a mspeed3 even tho I can get it at cost ) the miata is super great fun! We actually have an 08 manual hardtop going for like 22 right now it's gotten a lot of traffic, because a lot of people say the same thing, they don't wanna pay 30k+ for a miata (even tho they are super fun) .
Being that I'm in Carlsbad and our sisterndealership is dodge, I get to drive a **** ton of new cars and trade ins (notable recently challenger, camaro, stang, 135 , porsche boxter s and even a 05 vette and a 08 gsr.) IMO I all are super cool and fun. For me however, when I took my first corner in that gsr I was worried it wouldn't seem as cool as the first time after driving all those other awesome cars... Couldn't be more wrong. Downshifted and took it at 60, not a tire screech to be heard, and I was so pumped I almost missed my shift. The rest of the drive my heart was pounding and I was grinning the whole time. The vette was great nut not the same
On the other side of the coin, like you stated there is public opinion. Everyone loves vettes, they are more distinguished, and let's be honest.... You feel way more bad *** being in that. The EVO will get you dudes whonthink they know cars, and everyone else thinking youndrive some cheap toy tuner car they saw 10 years ago in the fast and furious movie their kids made them go see.... Literally. So in that regard you have a very valid point!
Also south coast is probably your best bet as far as cheapest cost on a new one ( anyone else correct me if I'm wrong on that one! )
I wouldn't say a Corvette handles better than an Evo or vice versa, they are just different. They both capable of insane grip right out of the box, both test at around .97-.99g stock. They just go about it in totally different ways - Corvette maximizing the mechanical grip potential with super wide tires (but also read this as, expensive QUICK if you track the car), light weight and low CG, while the Evo makes do with less contact patch, but the amazing torque vectoring AWD. Evo is definitely less of a handful to drive at the limit though.

And... I sat in the Porsche Boxster that you guys had sitting out near the entrance with the top down. Very cool car, I live Porsches a lot, but I don't want to have to deal with working on one right now.
I was trying to get a hold of a manual Corvette today to test drive with my wife but I could only find automatics... Thanks in part to all the posers who buy automatic Corvettes just to look cool and then get bored and trade them in. I didn't waste my time going to see one of those.
I'll try again this weekend. But let me tell you, the Evo is way ahead right now. Again, thanks for the advice. Means a lot coming from a guy who gets to try a bunch of different, probably has hook ups to get good deals and still chooses to get an Evo. That's legit right there.
Here's the black 2012 Evo my wife and I drove, but decided not to buy:

And then here's the one that might likely win overall. (Or another like this):
