600 miles. Now what?

Ok I am about to hit 600 miles and my car will officially be "broken in". Should I get an oil change now or am I ok until 5k? Any other fluids or things to change out on the 2011 MR before I drive it spirited?

And it seems everyone has a different way to break in a car, finding information on that was not easy. So I went with the keep it below 5k for the first 600 miles method. Some people say hammer it early, some say baby it, the book says 600 miles. What a pain to find solid info!

^I'm in the same boat. Just about to hit the 600 mile mark. I have been keeping it under 5,000 rpms....which has actually proved to be really difficult because the gearing is so short.

I would change the oil at 500 then change it every 3000 after that.

if you go by the manufacturers recommendations you got nothing to worry about, id put my money on what the company who built the car says over someone's here say

I have always followed the rule of break with break in oil. 500 miles change the oil. 1500 change the oil. 3000 miles your fully done.

I'm starting to think with the all the engineering and science that goes into motors and synthetic engine oils now a days, the low mileage oil change may not be necessary.... Not to say it wasn't true on older cars.

I think it may be a concern if the car was...

1) sitting on the dealer's lot for a long time, or
2) the old "sediment in the oil issue"

but....

1) You drove it off the lot for at least 600 miles. If it was really a problem dealers would change the oil as soon as you buy the car
2) The engines today are machined by precise tools and cleaned so that the chances of sediment are probably slim to none.

*Knocking on wood*

Do our cars come with synthetic oil from the dealer? or conventional?

This. The factory oil contains an extra moly additive to help the engine fully break-in, draining it before the recommended interval will do more harm than good.

You are correct, low mileage oil changes are a thing of the past with modern engines and factory machining tolerances. Evos come from the factory with Mobil 1 synthetic oil. Follow Mitsubishi's recommended oil change interval.

I changed my oil at 20 miles lol, they say to do that because of the new motor "metal shavings" blah blah blah... I was a happy new Evo owner and just wanted to get my hands dirty as soon as possible. Now I'll change it again as soon as I hit 3000

Who is "they" because "they" are wrong... Do you really think Mitsubishi would assemble an engine and leave metal shavings in it risking a huge warranty claim bill?

Did my first oil change at 2k then 6k and religiously did it every 3k, usually 2.8k.

actually, hes right. machines cant beat friction and metal-on-metal contact and initial wear will happen in any vehicke of any age, leavin even minute amounts of metal floating around.

so changing your oil after the first 20 to 45 miles then again at 200 then at 1500 then normal 3000 intervals is good practice. also so is using a magnetic drain plug..

It's no biggie, rather be safe than sorry... it did appear to have some kind of "flakey" looking things in the oil... could've just been my eyes lol
