600 miles. Now what?
With the manufacturing processes we have today that give us close tolerances, the debate rages whether or not to change the oil right away or leave it in for awhile. With Hondas, there is a definite break in oil with added molybdenum and zinc, so it is wise to leave it in for the recommended time. With my Si and now my Evo, which btw has 800 miles on the odometer, I leaving it in for a couple of thousand miles.
There was a time when it was very important to change the oil several times in the first 1,000 miles. I am not sure it is necessary today. Will it hurt to change the oil at 500 miles and again at 1,000 miles? No. But, as Kracka mentioned, there is moly in the oil when you buy new, so the anti-friction qualities are beneficial to help the break in process.
This almost segueways into another debate as to whether follow the manufacturerers' recommendations to go easy on the engine the first 600 miles, or whether to start beating on the car right away. We used to have huge battles over at 8th Civic about this. Again, I have always done what the manual says even though pundits say it is unnecessary.

That in mind, engines have oil filters for this reason.
Anyway, I did my first oil change at 1,200 miles, but that was because my car sat on the lot for some time before I got it.
Some engines do have magnetic drain plugs. Usually I can't see anything more than a tiny whisker of iron. However, in poorly maintained or extremely high mileage engines, I often see a beard attached to the magnet.
I was given a magnet that clings to an oil filter for free, and attach it to my filter for that reason, however, I never looked into how effective it really is.
