EVO or Beater...... Lets put it this way.

What 17-18yr old guy would want that car? I'd say more than you want trolling around your daughter. Beater hands down, then say for her 21st bday or when she graduates collage or something, then get her the EVO.

Coming from an 18 year old, who has been driving a 2003 Evo 8 for almost two years, its a good idea to teach her to drive a regular car or SUV at some point. I learned to drive on a 2001, 190,000 mile Honda Pilot. Then, after a year of driving that, I was allowed the privilege to start learning a manual transmission on the Evo. What a difference it was coming from the tank of a Honda pilot I was used to. I was stopping a solid 15-20 feet before stop signs now and accelerating like a bat out of hell just getting up to speed. Eventually, I got more used to the braking potential and torque of the Evo as I was allowed the privilege of daily driving it, but it still is more car then 90% of any 18 year old can fully handle, myself included.

I'm glad I did have the experience to learn on the pilot, because if I could drive that tank, I can drive just about any SUV or car now. If your daughter has to drive her friend's car home one night, it'll be quite an experience coming from an Evo to a Yukon or Suburban. Unless she will be driving solely performance cars her entire life, it would probably be a good idea to have her learn to drive a normal car or even an SUV for a bit of time- just as a precaution.

I'm not sure if you've taught her, but driving a standard transmission is now becoming almost a lost art. I think it would be a great skill to learn, that way she can drive anything, at any time. Especially other performance cars, because she is apparently quite fond of them.

If she is really and I mean REALLY responsible I would still get her a starter car before I would even think about getting her an Evo.

While I would have loved to learn how to drive, driving an Evo. I feel like you did her a disservice by doing do. I suggest a used Civic or something to cut her teeth on. Teach her to drive a manual also. Not all cars are flappy paddle gearboxes.

She needs to learn to drive conservatively and defensively for her own safety from other drivers on the road. She'll never learn this the way she should because of the capabilities of a car like the evo. If its her first and only car she'll think every car on the road is like this and can stop as quickly as that creating hazards for herself and others, not to mention if she ever has to drive her friends vehicles she will be expecting too much performance and be at risk of accident.

Its not that she cant handle an evo, its that right now she has no frame of reference for what her can do VS what the majority of the others cars on the road can do.

i would say that your daughter although used to driving the evo should not have one of her own yet! if you are looking into something new may a ralliart (that would be the most performance oriented vehicle i would give her)

others had a good ideas with giving her a beater. teach her to expand her driving skills and she'll grow as a better driver!

Tough spot! I would get her used to driving other cars though! When my kid gets older I want him to learn to drive anything with wheels and feel comfortable!

Personally, i feel like your giving into the indulgences of your daughter. Absolutely do not, she needs to learn and graduate to better vehicles. It's like those kids you see on MTV where the families all drive luxury cars so they expect to be treated in the same manor, so their parents buy them lambo's, land rover's, mercedes, and bmw's. Just nonsense, they have little to no experience parking, driving, etc, and you expect them to take care of a expensive investment.

Get a nice car, but dont overdue it is all im saying. 20k dollars will buy you a brand new tank. She can batter the doors off it, scratch the paint, curb the wheels to hell, and keep on driving. Let her burn the clutch out of it, who cares, because it'll all be under warranty, and insurance wont be outrageous. my .02 cents

Just buy her a Evo she's been driving it already for almost a year, it's your fault know you can't take that away from her.

Rates are going up either way since she's in the household. For her car, the EVO *she* drives would be a ton to insure though (more than, say, a Civic)

To me its more the insurance money issue. An EVO X stock isn't exactly a McLaren F1. I don't think it is so much different than the endless 335's being driven by 17 year olds near me... If anything its slower and safer.

If the money isn't an issue I don't see what the big deal is. I think the 17 year old male morons in 500hp mustangs on summer tires in the winter are a far bigger problem and no one seems to question that.

Did you come here to ask our opinions or to give us yours? Sounds like the latter of the two.

The problem I see is that she doesn't feel capable in a "regular" car. If I were you, I'd get her a "regular" car and help teach her on that. If she gets good at driving a "regular" car, it will make her an even better driver in the EVO.

I learned on a POS Kia Sephia .. so then when I got behind the wheel of much better cars, I was like, "Wow! These are amazing!!" .. I think your daughter learned the opposite way, so any car of lesser quality than the EVO, she'll feel unsafe.

Maybe a ralliart would be more prudent.

It comes down to money in the end. EVO's are extremely safe especially the X so there's not much argument there. If you can afford it, why not a 4th!
