Prepping for a tune...
Prepping for a tune...
So what would I need?
Do I need a boost gauge? ebc? [or mbc]? wideband?
could I walk into a shop bone stock and have a tune? (theoretically speaking)
-Also; could some people shed me some light on the ad/disadvantages of an ebc over mbc? and which one they use, brand, why, etc...
thanks

There are a couple of things I would recommend before getting your car tuned
-Boost leak test
-Fresh spark plugs
-Double check which fuel pump relay your Evo has: black or green
If you aren't sure about what to do, call your tuner and see what they would recommend.
As far as using a MBC or EBC, you'll hear mixed opinions on the matter from different tuners or Evo owners. I personally recommend an EBC. You won't have to worry about anyone messing with knobs or changing things under the hood, you have the ability to control boost by RPM (handy in California with crappy gas) which helps in keeping your car from knocking. You r tuner can lower boost anywhere in the RPM range that your car is knock sensitive, this keeps the powerband broader and makes the car smoother. Also, from what we've seen on our dyno, cars that use an MBC have a powerband that tapers down as the turbo starts to move out of its efficiency range and with an EBC we can "spread the love" through the whole RPM band.
I hope that helps give you some ideas.

You dont need anything really, if its opensource, your tuner should have everything. The only thing i would recommend at minimum is get a wideband. Also, i would personally run EBC -- most owners and most tuners prefer this.
As he previously menchioned a quick boost leak test is always a great idea. We always perform one on customers vehicles before we tune them.
Sparkplus are also a great idea, atleast have a spare set
For boost control get a grimmspeed 3 port. Everyone sells them I usually keep a few in stock. It will allow percise boost control and help maintain more boost in higher rpms
Gauges are uneeded however a wideband and boost gauge are a good piece of mind to have. Aem makes both gauges and work very well.
If you plan on changing any parts on your car down the road keep in mind they will require a retune

do you have a grimmspeed 3port yourself/ how do you like it?
which wideband???
also, is the grimmspeed 3 port ebc a part in which i can simply install on my near-stock evo, and not have to worry about it or adjust anything for possibly a month or two untill i take it to a tuning shop where they will do what they have to with it/

The black ones are notorious for failing, the green is better, and the blue is the best (most recent revision). So I'd say if you're in the market grab a blue relay. Here's a link to the best place I've found online for OEM parts so far (only owned my Evo for ~ 4 months now)... http://www.mitsubishiparts.net/cart/?pn=8627A024
Here's a good link that will explain where everything is in the fuse box... https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...y-package.html
You may want to stock up on a few since the shipping is just about as much as the part. I had relay's for my daytime running lights and highbeams go already within the 4 month. Just a heads up. Happy tuning, it's gonna wake her up, enjoy!

NO! You must be tuned to run this part correctly. Failure to do so will likely result in you loosing your engine as you overshoot your boost targets.
ok, so before i go to get. my evo tuned, should i call and inform them that i have this and have them (or me) install them the day of tune?
should all be install by u befor the tune. or you can pay them to install it,since you r asking these?you should have them install it to be safe.
