is it bad to run 87 octane once and awhile?
If i recall correctly coming across some threads where some accidently put 87 in their tank or of the sort, you should be ok, just do NOT go into boost. If you are going to be doing it time to time...i couldn't tell you how it could affect the car. Maybe bring jugs of 91 with you?
you'll just get pinging. just don't beat on the car and you'll be fine. I wouldn't make it a habit by any means, and probably only put enough in to get ya to wear ya need to be for 91+. Or just get a case of some good octane boost, and it could help also.
On a road trip I was in the middle of Wyoming and the only gas station in the middle of the night had only one working pump which only had 87. I filled up and stayed out of boost...it was hard to do but managed with no probs. Like others said, just drive like Grandma till you are back in the land of higher octane.

I think when people mean 87 can be OK usually means maybe one time out of five years if you are desperate or made a bone headed mistake.
Regularly putting in 87 will be very bad for your engine over the long term. Lower octane will cause the engine to knock, and repeated knocking is not good. Unless you never plan on using the turbo charger attached to the car and keeping RPMs below 3k (in which case, just buy a regular Lancer), put at least 91 octane into the tank.
