Ok, sorry, not funny.

I'm not sure a fabric cover that sits on the cars surface, will protect the car from big hail. It would be better then nothing of course, and you'd want the thickest you could find to disburse the impact force of any offending hail. That said, I'm wondering if you could use a tent? For example, at races we set up a 10 x 20 tent that does a nice job of protecting the car from rain and debris, keeps it cool, etc. It needs to be anchored ( we use extra wheels) but you could sort that out. Best news is they are pretty cheap ($150 or so). Would that work? It would provide great protection from birds and trees and hail.

As mentioned, a tent can be a better option. Unless the surface of the paint is pristine-clean - pristine - dragging the cover over the paint (unavoidable) will mar the finish.

FWIW, these are very good car covers:

If you search, there is actually another thread about this, I think in the Show & Shine forum.. A company just made a car cover that inflates when you turn it on with a remote and protect from hail. Kinda silly, but it worked very well..

Carports work really well if you have space for one, and aren't incredibly expensive..

^^ This one's around $1300, but there are alot to choose from. The one I ordered fits 4 vehicles with 80% coverage on one side, and was around $4k shipped and installed.

Only slightly off topic, but funny:

Some of the girls I work with don't understand the car guy thing at all. We had crazy thunderstorm and tornado warnings the other day. I saw that hail was just west of us and got nervous. They were like, "forget the hail, there's a tornado warning!" I said, "All a tornado can do is kill me, but hail will dent my car!" I thought it was a hilarious joke, they didn't laugh at all.

If there is a hail warning when I'm at work, I go into wuss mode and drive the sucker to the company down the street with a parking garage. DO NOT WANT.

You started it.

My similar event: I was at a baseball game that was played in a small park with no wall between the field and the parking lot. A foul ball was hit and seemed to headed towards my car. I dove in front of the ball, facing away, such that the ball hit me in the back of the head, almost knocking me out. As I was laying there, most people (after seeing if I was OK) wanted to know how I could be so stupid. I said: "I a biological system; I'll heal. My car won't."
