throw a wrench into this......going back a 'couple' years, but you were never supposed to use synthetic for the first oil change. Reg. oil was preferred cause it helped the rings break in better. This idea has faded away over the years, however......Hyundai with the new Genesis came back to this theory and maybe mitsu is considering it too?

Well I have my 2012 EVO and the owners manual states only 5W-30 and mentions no where any full synthetic is required. I havent looked in the engine bay yet to see if there is a mobil one sticker.

New theory: Mitsu has decided that dino oil is, for reasons that I can't even guess, less likely to contribute to timing-chain stretch, at least with the revised chain. If Mitsu is good at anything post-sale, it's dodging warranty work. If they have a way to avoid timing-chain issues, they'll do it.

I'm sure that there are several holes in my theory, but it's my theory, so I love it and will defend it to the death. Or until my timing chain stretches and snaps. Whichever comes first.

if true wouldnt they be more worried with the damage conventional oil will do to the engine / turbo?

Mine as well. 5W-30 and no sticker in the engine bay. So what kind of oil does the 2012 come with in it?

5w-40 fully synthetic is recommended by Mitsu for Canada and 5w-30 for the US.

+1. My 2010 manual states on page 7-10..

  • DO NOT use conventional petroleum based motor oil. Using conventional motor oil may cause engine or turbocharger damage.
  • DO NOT use "blends" of conventional oil and synthetic oil.
  • Use ONLY fully synthetic engine oils displaying ILSAC certification symbol or conforming to the API classification SM or higher. If the correct oil is not used, any oil-related engine or turbocharger failure, along with any peripheral engine or powertrain damage, will not be covered by your warranty.
I understand dropping the Mobil 1 branding, but there should be at least something in the 2012 manual stating which oils are ok to use. Even if it's now ok to use conventional, blends, or fully synthetic - it should state that somewhere in the book.

My dealership says for 2008-2011 the mitsubishi corp says to use Mobil 1 full synthetic , But for 2012, the dealership found it very strange that mitsu corp says to use conventional oil. Therefore thats what they would recommend me because mitsubishi says so... but they said of course its my money and i can do as i please... i just find it weird and annoying and would like to know why did mitsu want to switch back to conventional oil

EDIT: Forgot about this sign hanging in a Canadian Mitsu dealership (photo posted 12/29/2011 by 93gc8jdm). At the bottom, it says: Oil Specs have changed.. 0W-30 or 0W-40 Mobil 1 fully synthetic is required for Lancer Ralliart and Evolution models
