Cat back, or turbo back?

So, I'm looking at doing some minor modding, things that aren't likely to void a warranty. I've got a drop in filter.

I bought universal mufflers, then went to a performance shop that custom mandrel bends exhaust systems. Went 3" all the way from turbo to 4" tip and paid only 450 all together...

Performance gains with turbo back with tune.. turbo back shoots fireballs.. turbo back really loud... turbo back voids warranty but easily reversible before taking it in... turbo back breaks federal law.. turbo back is fun!

I started by just replacing the CAT with a testpipe. That coupled with an air filter and UIP should wake the car up a bit.

Every dealer is going to be different regarding voiding warranty. You have to understand, a representative at your dealership has to report to Mitsubishi your VIN. Most places are cool with it, others not so much. I simply have a cat-back, uicp, and intake and my local dealer says it's no problem.

Wait, a full turbo back will backfire and spit out fire *****!? o.O

Is that because there's no catalytic?

I'm not worried so much about the fact that it's illegal. We don't have emissions tests here in Minnesota. But some how getting pulled over because I'm shooting fireballs doesn't seem good.

Two questions, what are the benefits of going full turbo back vs just keeping the stock cat, and adding a cat back? Price wise it's like a $500-$600 difference. Also, what kind of problems might going full turbo back vs. cat back cause?

The second thing is that I would like people's opinion. I've been looking at youtube for a bit and I'm down to Borla, Magnaflow or Agency Power. What are your thoughts?
It really depends on what your going for. Either way it goes 9/10 dealerships will not accept an exhaust whether its CB or TB. TB tends to be louder and deeper. If your trying to keep it simple with something easy to swap back I would say go CB.

Shennanigans. Know the Magnusson-Moss act. Don't be a pushover. However, I wouldn't be surprised if a dealer gives you a bad time about having a TP or HFC. That is a federal regulation.

However, most dealers wont complain about a cat-back because as long as the OE catalyst is in place they know no damage can happen to the car or it's tune. They of course will not warranty your exhaust specifically because it's aftermarket, but if you exhaust breaks you can always put your stock one back on (provided you dont sell it or whatever).

Going with a Turbo-back/Testpipe/HFC is likely to throw a CEL for insufficient catalyst. You'll either have to get lucky with the defouler trick or get a tune to get past the CEL. Doing a tune will create warranty issues obviously. So, since you mentioned you want to stay warranty friendly this is the general list of mods that dealers don't even care about:

1. Drop-in filter / reputable SRI
2. Upper IC pipe
3. Lower IC pipe
4. Cat-Back
5. suspension
6. wheels (as long as the fitment is on and you're not pushing for something super aggressive)
7. FMIC

Have fun and enjoy your Evo. I'm running with intake, UICP, and a GReddy Ti-C cat-back. I honestly don't feel some huge power gain, but I know I wont unless I go for a tune, but the car is a lot more fun now that I can hear the dv dump into the intake and hear the turbo spool.

As for your exhaust choices, I wanted the AP really bad, until I saw and heard it up close. Then not so much. The GReddy Ti-C definitely sounds BADASS though. I love it. No drone on the highway, and nice and smooth. Fitment is amazing too. Better than the OE muffler IMO.

I would personally just go with the full turbo-back if one's goal is modding for power.

If one is modding for looks then just go with the cat-back.

He mentioned wanting to stay in line with a warranty. He can always go cat-back and then when the warranty is up just go with a test pipe and downpipe and not have to buy something completely new.

Really with an OE cat the difference is only like 15-20hp loss. I mean, you can feel that difference, but you can still hit 300+whp will an OE cat and other boltons with a tune.
