Catastrophic failure!...almost

So I finally get the car back together after 6 weeks (swapped to wrapped DP and tube mani, front motor mount and rear diff mounts) and went rippin an tearin around the back roads. Everything was AWESOME! After about 45 mins of cruising I head home, go to get on the highway and get on it hard, as I shifted from 3rd-4th I heard a LOUD, I mean LOOOUD pop sound. My heart sunk and my legs started shaking (I"m a broke *** military guy), I put it in neutral and coasted to the side of the road. Thinking I bent a rod or effed the tranny I sat on the side of the road and listened to it idle for a bit and it sounded ok, I revved it to about 1.5k and it still sounded fine, put it in 1st and drove forward slowly and it sounded different so I stopped and turned it off. Come to find out I blew the UICP apart at the middle coupling. I'm assuming when I put it back together it the clamp was just too close to the edge but still had me nervous as all get out.....anybody ever have this happen and if so any ideas on how to prevent reoccurance besides clamping further down the coupling?

Glad it wasn't anything serious! Yes, it does happen from time to time. Just make sure those t bolt clamps are on there good lol.

Nice whp/wtq numbers. I'll be getting tuned at RRE soon as well!

yea actually this weekend on my way to the oc awd meet. if the coupler is too short, maybe get a longer one so there will be more clamping area. also, i usually spray with soapy water around where the clamp goes. not sure how effective it is, but i still do it.

Happened to me on track. On WOT and almost on redline.
It was uicp which popped off from intercooler. I lost car on behind me on big white smoke.

Yeah, make sure you put high quality t-clamps everywhere! Normal clamps sucks.

If piping has wrap around bead use t clamps and secure it a little bit up of the bead and clamp hard. Had this happen as I was road tuning my car and fp red. Grabbed for 3rd Nd BANG..popped hood noticed uicp popped off. Thought I bent hood lol

Hit the pipe with some cheap mega hold hair spray "Aquanet" or similar then quickly before it dries put it together and clamp it down. It won't move after that. Just give it a while after that to dry before driving.

Heh, I have a heavily modded VR-4 and the y pipe will often blow off under high boost. Will scare thi **** out of you the first few times because it will hit the hood when it separates from the rest of the inter cooler piping. glad it was nothing serious!

It's an AMS pipe, has the bead, never happened to me before…went to 3 different auto parts shops today and everybody only carries worm gear clamps (the crap ones)…guess I gotta get t-bolts online. I bought a new worm gear clamp and am gonna put the hairspray method to the test….I'll report back later. If all else fails there will be an AMS UICP for sale or for trade for maybe a titanium UICP...

Order T-bolt clamps and use hairspray.

regular worm clamps work just as well if not better than t-bolt clamps contrary to popular belief. the pressure placed on the coupler by the clamp is more evenly spread on a worm clamp than a t-bolt. my source(aside from seeing 900+hp supras using worm clamps), a company some of you may know as AMS.

Well D@mn I JUST bought two carbon fiber looking T-bolts....as for the boost issue I'm curious as to if it's due to changing out down pipes. I went from a UR shorty DP to a MAP O2 dump DP w/ the regular flange. I was only running 24psi and read that the regular flange people saw boost creep. Thinking when I go to RRE I'll get my 1000cc injectors installed and raise boost maybe to 26 or 27. Still stock block and my DD so gotta be careful.

Had it happen to me before and I had to fix it on the side of the road. Glad it was nothing serious.
