Markup on USED Evo X GSR

Guys,

I wanted to get some information from ANYONE who purchased a used Evo X GSR/MR. My question is:

How much were you able to talk the dealership down from their posted sticker price? How much was the car selling for and what did you get it for?

I am in the market to buy a used Evo in the next few months and want to try to get an idea on the markup on these cars. I know A LOT of factors will determine how far they will come down in price but I've read the rule of thumb for most cars is 2K increase in price for every 10K value of the car.

Thank You,
Lando

When I bought mine, it had over 12k worth of of Cobb and Alpine aftermarket parts on it. Dealership wanted 37k, I paid 30.5. The car is a 2011 and had 4500 miles on it. Hope this helps.

Thanks b3n. ANY info helps. I just want to get a feel for how agressive I should go in my price negotiating. There is one for sale here in Phoenix for $27,000 ( Red 2008 GSR with 41,000 miles). I really want White or Blue but I may be willing to settle for red, especially if I get a good price. I'm thinking about calling to try and talk to them over the phone. If I could get the car for about 23K or 24K I may end up buying it.

25k will be likely the lowest they'll let it go for. I suggest reading up on some used car negotiation tactics in order to get the best price possible.

The secret is to ensure that YOU are in control of the negotation. Don't let the salesman take control or you'll get ripped off. Always negotiate the selling price of the car and not the monthly payments. Negotiate the trade-in value of your car AFTER you settle on a price for the Evo. Dealers will sometimes give you a good deal on the car if they think they can rip you off on your trade-in

Definitely look up the book value with the mileage/condition and bring it with you (assuming its lower than what they are asking). Usually assume that the dealer paid no more than book trade in, to give you an idea of how much room they have to move.

BTW - that's exactly how I ended up with red - it was the one the dealer had where I got the best price by far. It definitely wasn't my first choice, but has grown on me.

I looked up trade in value for the car I was talking about (Red 2008 Lancer GSR w/ 41,000 miles) and here is what I found on Edmonds and Kelly Blue Book:

I listed the car in EXCELLENT condition

KBB: $23,707 (Trade-in), $25,877 (private seller)
Edmonds: $20,895 (Trade-in), $25,046 (What dealer will re-sale car at) $26,551 (re-certified)

I live in Phoenix. With that being said, how much would YOU guys go in trying to get the car for? What would be a realistic expectation of what I may get? I know this is just opinions.

I actually had the guy from the dealership call me about the car. On the pics I saw it had aftermarket gauges so I asked about mods. He said the previous owner was one of their techs who traded it in for a MazdaSpeed 3. He said that although the car was modded, the tech took REAL good care of it and NEVER raced it (lol, yeah RIGHT). He also said that there were people on the lot right now looking to buy it (bs) and I better hurry. I basically told him I want an Evo, I don't NEED an Evo and I'm willing to wait till the right one comes across my path. I also told him to talk to his Sales Mgr and call me back with an agressive price. Since the car has been modded (most likely voiding the warranty) they'll have to give me a GREAT price (I'm hoping $22,500 - 23,500) for me to honestly make a move on it. If not, I'll wait for another Evo X to come along.

It is always good to be willing to walk away if you don't get the deal you want. If that is truly the case, the I would suggest offering a little less than what you are looking to pay and see where it goes from there.

Since the car is modified it would usually be worth less than if stock, so I don't think you would be out of the realm of feasibility making an initial offer of ~$21,500. Then you still have room to negotiate before getting to the max price that you want to pay.

Good luck.

I bought mine from Carmax, so I paid what was on the sticker. They have a good selection and can ship cars in from across the country. Its not a bad deal.

As a point of reference, when I wrecked my 2008 WW GSR, the insurance company cut me a check for 28k...that was including tax of course. The car had 33k miles on it. I would initially offer 24 and work my way up to probably 25.5.

My initial offer on my current car was 28.5 - they immediately tried to redirect me to a different car but it was all BS to get me to go up, we both knew it. What helped I think was I brought them a written proposal outlining the car's value, other dealership's prices, costs of upkeep that would need to be done, etc. The point is, just make sure you have all the ammunition available when you go in to negotiate and don't take their initial reaction at face value.

Which is a GOOD thing.

People always look at this **** the wrong way. All this means is that you are pretty well assured a high re-sale value down the line.

Would you rather have a car you talked the dealer down $2,000 on with a resale value of 30% or a car you talked the dealer down $500 and a resale value of 65%?

Evo's hold stupid high resale value, be happy.
