What are the limitations of the MR's SST transmission as far as mods are concerned? I plan on buying one next month and want to eventually moderately increase HP/TQ, but don't want to break anything or have clutch issues.

Yeah, engine rpm fluctuations like what ur describing is 99% clutch. And since ur an MR, it's the clutch pack.

Just FYI, got my car back yesterday from the shop - They've diagnosed it and believe the problem to be the entire SST. So its an extremely expensive repair, but thankfully its covered by Mitsu, so I'm not paying a cent =)

I have to wait 4 weeks for the parts to arrive, will let you all know whether or not it fixes the issue once its installed.

Hey all sorry about the bump. Just in case anyone is interested, Mitsu decided to try to avoid replacing the SST and just replaced the Clutch Pack. Got my car back yesterday and the problem is completely gone. I'll keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't return but so far so good.

Appreciate all the advice from everyone!

I have a similar yet slightly less noticable issue, more like it rises and falls only a little during each gear (before the shift, im a noob but not that much). I dont feel any push pull and its nothing like when my clutch was slipping in my evo 8. Also if i shift using paddle shifters, it doesnt occur..am i just paranoid?

Mine was doing the same, but far worse in my case. On top of that it would alternate constantly. causing a pretty nasty loss of power.

Not really sure why you're seeing a difference when using the paddles, as its all electronic and shouldn't make any kind of difference. If you know anyone else that has an X, get them to drive your car and see if they feel a difference in its drive.

I think mine was easily noticed simply due to how bad the issue ended up getting - my car literally feels completely different to drive now.

Happy to hear

I'm also happy to hear I nailed the problem and resolution so early in the thread

I never blame a dealership or shop on trusting what a customer says, because the average joe blow doesn't know the difference between Lancer GTS or Evo GSR. Good part about it is, if you diagnose faster than the dealership a good service writer stops talking to you and just calls a tech up to talk to you when you drop off your car

Wow thats great. They used to never work on the SST's - I thought they had some agreement with gerret. Glad to see that resolved your issue and that mitsu is now doing some of the simple things with this tranny.
