Strange Problem

Hi all,

Just so everyone knows - I'm a complete noob when it comes to Evo's. I bought a MY09 Evo X MR a couple weeks ago and have been experiencing a really strange issue with it since I picked it up, so I was hoping for a bit of advice..

Essentially what happens is, when throttle is applied, the revs jump up and down. It happens in all scenarios really - I'm cruising at 60km/h, the speed doesn't jump around but the revs are jumping up and down every second or so by increments of a couple hundred RPM, and you can hear the engine tone go up and down.

This also happens when accelerating, with a very push/pull feeling due to the revs moving up and down so sporadically.

I've seen people with a similar issue with idle, but I don't know if this one is related, seeing as it occurs when moving.

I should also point out that this can start happening anywhere above 1500rpm.

My car is still under Mitsubishi warranty, and also a 3 month dealership warranty, so I'd like to get this fixed ASAP. My car is booked into Mitsubishi in 13 days from now, but If this is something simple I can resolve myself, I'd like to give it a go.

Appreciate any help!

sounds like a clutch slipping, but that would be with a traditional clutch. Because you have the SST I honestly have no idea what to expect, but that's just what it sounds like.

Either way hit up the dealer. I think clutchpacks are one of the very few things Mitsu is authorized to do with the SST.

I'll look for this but I'm thinking its the less likely cause, as the RPM is pretty low when the issue starts.

Someone had mentioned to me that they thought it was the clutchpack - not sure if this is a bad thing or not with these cars, really need to do more reading on the SST's.

shouldn't have a problem with the clutchpacks until you make over 360lb-ft of torque, or so the word has been on here.

True, but who knows what the previous owner had done to the car. It was sold to me as completely stock from the dealership, and from what I can tell it is 100% stock, so I'm hoping that it hasn't been damaged in the past.

I've spoken to quite a few people/mechanics on the matter and nobody seems to have any knowledge of a problem like this. So far I've had spark plugs, ecu issue, clutch pack, and vacuum leak suggested to me. I'm really hoping that Mitsubishi are able to properly diagnose this when I take it in. Bit disappointed I'm having to deal with this on a car that I purchased less than 2 weeks ago...

You will always run risks with used Evo's. And people/dealerships are really good at returning it back to stock. Most people seem to hold on to their OEM parts when they mod their car. I wonder why?

Either way its under warranty so your good. Hopefully everything gets fixed and is good to go for many years to come. The SST's can get very pricey when out of warranty.

Sounds like the clutch pack is slipping... If rpms fluctuate and your speed isn't affected

That's exactly what's happening. Clutch pack seems to be a pretty popular opinion, I'll suggest it to the mechanics when i take it in. Will post back here when I know more.

I was thinking clutch pack, but have never heard of that with the MR. I'd start simple and check for leaks...

I'll suggest that to the service guys. I'd do that myself but this is a whole new world to me, haven't learnt enough about how it all works yet.

Im completely ignorant about MRs and the SST but like someone said, maybe the previous owner had lots of power then the tranny/clutches started acting funny, put the car back to stock and sold it. If you have the dealer warranty get that transmission checked right away. Hope everything works out for you man!

Ive seen a few Ralliarts that have this issue and its usually an SST problem. Clutches are slipping and trying to find the right gear the whole time. Check the RA forums for more info.

Hopefully the previous owner wasn't one of these idiots that did neutral 5K drops.

I'm pretty convinced it is the clutches now. I'm seeing the issue worse in some gears than others, and it's only just occurred to me that the issue is non existent in 6th.

10 more days until I can take the car back and get it sorted. Hate these waiting games....
