Getting ready to buy

I'm getting ready to trade in my Civic Si for an Evo. I'm gearing towards a GSR, although I can easily afford the top MR if I really wanted it. My question(s) to you guys (and gals) are the following:

Is the Sight and Sound package worth the money, or should I just mod that myself?

Is there anything wrong just getting the base car? Won't be tracking, but will be COBBing. COBB tuning is only a few miles from my work and they seem like really nice guys... I think they moved from Colorado to Austin, TX.

A dealership in Dallas (Don Herring in Irvine) is my choice to work with. Any negative feedback on these guys? Their prices look good, offer a warranty on stage II (they honor that warranty only).

Side question... I'm aware of a GSR SE car for sale with 10K. Is this worth while considering only 300 were made? I want a manual, but this is a rare car.

Any thoughts, good, bad, or ugly are welcome.

Cheers!

Get a new GSR. Someone who wants a manual isn't going to be happy with a 'auto-manual'. I wouldn't, at least.

As far as the SS, I am in the same boat.. $2100 is a lot, especially when I only want the HIDs. I would probably spring for it though, as a nice stereo isn't a bad thing.

I have both MR and GSR. The GSR is a base model. The MR has SSS and Aero kit. I will say the stock nav stereo setup is nice compared to the moderate pioneer aftermarket setup in my GSR. The GSR is more fun to drive and for me 5spd is the just the only way to do a sporty car, but I will say the MR is also quite fun and makes other manumatics I've driven seem stupid. If you want that raw drivability and the ability to make big power go with the GSR just make sure you get HID's. (my only real regret about the base model). If you want an exciting automatic with a little bit nicer ride comfort that you can still make go real quick, go with the MR. I was tempted by an SE also but ended going with the MR, 08 MR with 20k mi was valued higher than 10 SE with 10k. So it was a better value in my situation. SE's have heated seats.

It's rare to find a Mitsubishi dealership to honor warranty with someone tuning the car. It sounds like a score to me.

I got the GSR basic so I could put money into mods. No regrets on my end. I considered the MR, but I wanted a manual gear box.

Make you decision on what gear box you want. Don't focus on the SE being rare with only 300 made. The Evo X in general is quite rare. How many do you actually see on the road? Not many. Out here in Albuquerque, I've only spotted 4 of them on the road in the nine months that I've lived here.

SS and an aero kit on a GSR. i love my smart key and the factory HIDs plus the upgraded sounds arent bad. you just cant pound the ever living crap out of the sounds because the amp will turn it down to prevent you from blowing the speakers. I say aero kit because it just looks a hell of a lot nice then base model.

FASTkey is awesome.

Also if you aren't planning on doing an aftermarket sound system, the RF system is nice.

The questin is, how much does a stereo kit (double DIN) cost for the EVO? Is it the same as a standard Lancer kit?

A GSR with sight and sound package is nearly the same a base car with leather option. Tough call for me...

You need to test drive BOTH cars extensively and see which you prefer. I would definitely come to DON HERRING in Irving. Don supports the Evo community very well and does honor warranty up to Stage 2 with a Cobb AP tune as long as you don't delete the cat or have a high flow one.

Come to Dallas and you can meet several NTEC Evo owners and see their cars.

Last I saw Don even had a full stage 2 car sitting on his showroom floor.

I went from a built 2007 Honda Civic Si to a 2011 Evo X GSR. Best move ever. HP gains are actually substantial, unlike the Si where hp gains are counted on ones' fingers. Do it.

The SS is worth the change, even though it is alot of money. The HID headlights are awesome and it takes alot to recreate the same effect.. (projectors and everything). Plus the fast key is something that is almost impossible to install later.

Yeah, the stereo and stuff can be upgraded later if you get the base model, but the other stuff is either hard or really expensive to install and make it just as good as the SS package.

Aero kit is meh to me on the '12s. They don't include the side skirts in the package anymore- you have to order and install those seperately if you want them. You can always buy a nice aftermarket lip and get the side and rear extensions later anyway..

I agree with you. These cars are rare. My wife and I test drove a 2013 GT. Huge power and nice car, but you see them everywhere. I like to blend in, and a 400 plus HP Stang does not do that well. My wife liked driving the GSR, but I almost need a booster seat for her. That said, as a short lady, she had trouble seeing over the hood of the 5.0 liter Mustang.
