Getting ready to buy
The one thing I have noticed about Don Herring is he likes the WW. Just looking at his website right now he has 31 Evo's.1 AS
2 PB
1 OB
4 MG
The other 23 are WW. Man thats alot of WW's.
Like others have said, buy the Evo based on the gear box. If you want a stick get the GSR. If you prefer auto then get the MR.
I bought a base model. I could have bought one with the SS or SL. They didnt have any in stock in my area and I didnt feel like paying $40 grand for an Evo. I had the hid's on my Outlander Sport. They were pretty bright. They were nice to have the one time I went camping and the one time I went out to the lake house. So twice in over a year I was glad I had them. But for the most part I live and drive in a large city. Most places are lit up pretty well. I havent really missed not having the hid's. I guess others might.
I also plan on putting in a amp and sub pretty soon. The stock system isn't really that good. But add a sub and it will sound a lot better.
I would say if you want the hid's then get the SS. But if you don't care so much about upgrading the factory sound system, then $2000 is a bit much just for brighter head lights. Alot of people say the base head lights are really bad but I think they work just fine. I guess since I have a base I might just be bias.
Also some people mention getting the aero kit. You don't really need it for the newer ones. I believe they made the side skirts stick out more compared to the 08's. Thats why the aero kit doesnt come with them now. All your really buying is the front and back and IMO they don't really look that great. Not really worth the money to me.
I also haven't heard anything negative from Don Herring. One member drove up there from San Antonio and bought his Evo. He said they had some number difference on his trade. I think when he got there they were trying to offer less then what they told him but I believe he said they got it taken care of. Other then that they seem to be a good dealership for the Evo community. I wish I bought there instead of here in San Antonio. The dealership i went to tried to rip me off for $1600.
You need to test drive BOTH cars extensively and see which you prefer. I would definitely come to DON HERRING in Irving. Don supports the Evo community very well and does honor warranty up to Stage 2 with a Cobb AP tune as long as you don't delete the cat or have a high flow one.
Come to Dallas and you can meet several NTEC Evo owners and see their cars.

In terms of the SS package, I wonder if these guys are worth while:

If you want to add a sub as you said, I'd make my own (as I usually do). 3/4 inch MDF works. Here is my next project sub: http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...number=297-460
Congrats on your purchase. You did the right thing. I got a base GSR and am very happy with it. You can get Depo HID headlight replacements very cheaply should you decide to upgrade. Both my son and I have them [mine are coming shortly] on our 2011 GSR's. I wish I lived in Texas. I cannot imagine that many Evos in one place. Where I live, 3 or4 is about the maximum at the two dealerships that sell Mitsubishis.

Based on some of the forum feedback (like yours), I'm thinking of the base model.
My wife likes leather (extra 2K). Like the leather, but I never use a sunroof in the Texas sun. Must... make... wife... happy...
I'll call the dealer tomorrow. I sent him my current car pics, and I need to give him my price for trade-in 2008 Si. He was honest about the way they calculate (combination of black book, blue book, auctions, and regional supply).
AS- 3%
PB- 6%
OB- 3%
MG- 13%
RR- 0%
WW- 74%
Now I realize this is just a rough percentage based on the inventory of this one dealership. But I know there are alot of WW's out there. And every time I see a dealership with a handful of Evo's they are usually WW. Just makes you wonder what the actual paint percentage is for the Evo X's? I know RG is the rarest. What is the next rarest? Why does Mitsu produce so many WW's? What are the color percentages and why? I remember looking at the Don Herring selection months ago back when they had 2011's in stock. It was also very similar in color choices.

Dallas is a larger area when compared to my city (San Antonio). Here is SA we are 7th largest in city population in the US. We have 3 Mitsu dealerships here. But at one time we usually only have 1-2 (new) Evo's to choose from. And they dont usually deal much on them. In comparison we have very limited selection here in Texas excluding Don Herring.
I would have went with Don Herring when I bought mine but I did not know about them first off. And secondly I really didnt feel like driving about 9 hours round trip. I prefer to go to a local dealership and drive off an hour later. But if you're close by or dont mind the road drip then they are the way to go for North Texas and southern OK. Besides Don Herring though your choices in Texas are very limited and the price is usually pretty high.

As for buying in Dallas, when we were there (Dallas Cowgirls locker room is sic btw) I ran into a EVO GSR owner. He said he bought from South Coast (southern CA) and shipped his car into Texas using DAS for about $700 back in 2008. Not sure why, but he got the car he wanted. I think others can ship shorter distances for much less.
As for Herring being kind to Evo owners, I learned that Don Herring Jr. is a big Evo enthusiast. He was on vacation, so I could not speak to him, but he is out of the Irving office.

I'm not sure about the color situation. Interesting when you think about it. Most are conservative colors (grey, white, black). We also test drove a new GT Mustang three weeks ago (no thanks). The dealer had lot's of crazy colors. The Boss on the lot was orange! Most Evos I see are conservative colors.

Don Herring is a great Evo dealership for Texas. I just always wondered why so many WW. Maybe Jr likes the WW?
South Coast is also an option. They usually have a larger selection then Don Herring and if you go by the online pricing they are usually cheaper. But you do need to factor in shipping and i believe they don't accept out of state trade-in either.

OP, before you go in there to talk price, call South Coast and see what price they will offer you. I was able to get mine new and I paid under invoice price.
Get the OB color!
