Wilwood makes a set of "rally brakes" for the fronts not too expensive eitherhttp://www.amsperformance.com/cart/A...Brake-Kit.html

The front is easy. Anyone can do the front. And for less than AMS asks for, as well. $1600 for the fronts only is nuts.
And, no, the ride would not be smoother ... assuming that the picture is for real. Gravel tires have rock-hard sidewalls. If you drove the same lousy road twice, once on 15" gravel tires and once on 18" R-S3s ... assuming that the picture is real, of course
... then the ride would be smoother on the latter.

Alright, I had my fun.
The picture is real. Ryan at ThompsonRacingFabrication.com now has front AND REAR kits to put 15" wheels on an Evo X. The fronts drop 14# per side, more than half of which is rotating, and the rears drop 4# per side. And this isn't using paper-thin rotors, either. These are meant for stage rally.
Braking distance on tarmac increased by about 9% using Wilwood's least-aggressive pads (which brought the car back to where a stock Evo 8/9 is, since the braking system on an X is so good). I'll do some more testing (when it stops raining) with the next step up pads in the front, because I know that the bias is a tad too much to the rear (on purpose, for low-grip situations). I just wanted to start with the least-aggressive pad for more modulation on gravel. But I also autocross, so I will try other combinations and say more later. But, man, the rotation with a little left-foot braking is wonderful.
Note: I would not only recommend these brakes for people who play in the dirt, but also for both drag-racers and autocrossers. Because the rotors are as big and thick as the brakes on a RalliArt, which is on the same line in the SP rules, they are legal for ASP, as well as SM.

$950 for the fronts. $1400 for the rears. Or $2300 for everything. Included all the adapters and hoses, etc.
edit: I should have mentioned this before, for people who know why the rears on an X are such a pain: this kit retains the OE hand-brake. That's why it's legal in Prepared AWD (rallycrossing) and ASP (autocrossing).
