Cool 2011 Evo X MR cracks 11's with Stock Turbo!

Yahooo!

So after running some 12.2x's @ 112 at the Buschur Shootout I decided to take a run at what I think is the first Stock Turbo Evo X MR into the 11's!!

What has me baffled is that I don't have aftermarket cams, tubular manifolds, or any modifications to the turbo system whatsoever. The engine is completely stock. Mod list on the performance side is somewhat light so I must have gotten a strong car from the factory. Tuning it for about 3* extra timing up top on 100 unleaded versus my 93 octane daily driver map helped keep the top end alive although it definitely started to run out of torque at 7k+ and manually shifting slightly higher had minimal gains:

Track Conditions 65*F cooling off to 60*F, about 29.9 Pressure

Best Autoshifting (1-2 = 7600, 2-3 = 7300, 3-4 = 7000, 4-5 = 7000)

60' 1.706
1/8 7.666 @ 91.17 mph
1/4 11.965 @ 113.82 mph

Best Paddle (1-2 = 7800, 2-3 = 7500, 3-4 = 7300, 4-5 = 7200)

60' 1.723
1/8 7.674 @ 93.61 mph
1/4 11.974 @ 114.15 mph

Shift points are where the trans actually shifted, my 1st gear TPS cuts back throttle from 100% to 30% between 7500-8000 which helps complete the shift. I also have a bit of TPS taken out at peak torque which seemed to help the short times along with dropping the pressures to 28 psi cold. As the night went on I started spinning all 4 tires off the line but it didn't hurt the short times too much.

Performance Mods:
Buschur 3" Crossflow Catback Exhaust
Invidia 3" High flow cat and DP combo
ETS 4" Front Mount Intercooler
Custom 2.5" Upper IC Pipe
Custom Cold Air Duct to factory airbox
Grimspeed 3-port solenoid
DW 800cc Fuel Injectors (stock injectors were at 100% IDC with 112 mph trap speeds)
Hiboost tune for 100 octane @ 26 psi tapering to 20 psi with 11.5 AFR and about +3* timing

Things to note:
Stock Turbo
Stock Manifold
Stock Panel Air Filter (Forgot to swap in my K&N from the other car!)
Stock Turbo intake and filter box
Stock Lower IC Pipe
Stock O2 Housing
Stock Fuel Pump (should be good until 120 mph trap speeds)

Handling Mods:
Aeromotions R2 Wing (set flat, didn't seem to hurt my MPH!)
APR Carbon lip (didn't seem to add too much drag)
BC Racing ER Series Coilovers 8k/10k (selling these soon although they really allowed the car to come off the line well, swapping to KW Clubsports,)
285/35-18 Hankook R-S3 Tires on Volk TE37 wheels

Cooling Mods:
AMS Transmission Cooler and Fan
Mishimoto X-Line Radiator

So I figured this was a good baseline to compare swapping in a 3" ETS MAF pipe with cone filter, Lower IC pipe and a few other tweaks. Somehow in my haste to scramble to drain most of the 93 octane and pull the rear seats to save some weight I neglected to move my K&N filter from the Outlander Sport over to the Evo. After driving home and noticing my AFR's were a few tenths richer than I remembered on this map I didn't realize until the drive home that the factory panel filter was still in the car! :computermad:

Still that just proves that even the factory panel air filter is more than capable of flowing some air, I can only imagine what I could have done with all my ducks in a row!

I have a Full-Race tubular manifold that came off my sponsor's car that was used with a GT30. I'm considering bolting up the manifold to see what kind of gains could be had with the stock turbo because this is now kind of fun to see how far it can go!

I'm also considering some good cams that would work well with the stock turbo but also need to be matched to my future upgrade turbo which I'm thinking might be an EFR 7670 to run with the stock engine for at least one season. While I like the EFR 8374 sized turbo on the sponsor's MR with the Buschur 2.2 engine, it might be slightly too sleepy for my taste with a 2.0 stock engine but we'll see.

That's pretty impressive for a stock turbo.

Indeed and considering how many things I could still upgrade, it's actually kind of exciting to see how far I can push it now before I upgrade to a larger turbo!

Very nice 1/4 times your putting down considering you have a stock turbo.

Wow, just goes to show you how brilliant the tranny is on the MR. Floored you were able to get into the 11's with just bolt-ons! Something I'll make a note of when it comes to upgrade mine, good job!

Now I have a goal!

I have the SE, I wonder what the weight difference will do for me?

I owed much of the success to tuning for the 100 unleaded, switching to a Grimspeed 3-port for boost control, and of course applying all the MR tuning tricks to the clutchpacks for fast clean shifts with no slip. Boost was spiking to 28 psi but settled at 26 psi until 5500 and then rapidly tapered to 20 psi by 7000. Higher boost really doesn't do anything besides spin your tires more in 1st gear and once you are rowing (or paddling?) the gears 2nd-5th you are in the 5500-7500 range where any extra boost beyond 26 psi really has no effect.

Thanks guys, looking forward to see how far I can push it. The GSR was too frustrating when drag racing since usually 4th was reving too high to be effective on the stock turbo and shifting to 5th would just kill times. The SST tranny has almost no penalty shifting to 5th, plus it's geared quite a bit shorter since 6th is our overdrive cruising gear.

Pull out as much weight as you can, it really does help! I yanked the rear seats and swapped in my lightweight battery, only took a few minutes in the driveway before I left. The extra road noise from the rear wheel wells is insane but since I'm on my final stretch of the racing season I'll leave it out for some racing at Watkins Glen with Real Time Attack and other HPDE's, plus another trip or two to the drag strip if I can time the weather.

What are these tricks and how can I get them?

Congrats man. This was something I had hoped for but never had ANY SST tuning done when I ran 12.2s last year @115 but on 94 octane none of that fancy 100 stuff haha. Very good. And I hope all tweaks done are in all tuners hands

Awesome 60foot too. That's one thing ALL the MRs have suffered from poor 1.8s

I don't think cams would help, a few other add ons definitely would tho.

Now we need videos!

MAYBE the guys who runs GSR can respect the SST for drag and understand it's capable of anything now . Not likely..but they slower anyways

Razorlab and a few of the other gurus have helped me with tuning the MR's in the past couple years. There are a few summary posts of what each tables effect, although the model year of the car also effects what the SST transmission does with higher torque. Seems the 2011's are a bit better than the 2008's and I've seen it first hand tuning my sponsor's MR for the One Lap events.

115 mph on 94 octane is quite good! What supporting mods did you have with the stock turbo at that point, or was it an upgraded turbo? I have seen cams add around 15whp to stock turbo setups but you are right in that they aren't nearly as effective as they are on larger turbo combos.

60' time was just me not being lazy and letting some air out of the tires, just need fresh rubber if I want that extra tenth off the line. The front motor mount helps a ton as does the suspension being dialed in correctly. I am using the Perrin Positive Steering Response System with Caster and the Whiteline Roll Center Correction Kit which help to take out some slop from the driveline. There's no front to rear see saw action so the spring combo and shock tuning seem to be dialed, just hooks and goes with only slight wheel spin.

I'll try and remember the video cameras next time, was rushing out the door so a few things were forgotten!

Chris, I met you at the shootout. I own an X and Chris Carbee introduced me to you, we spoke for a while about your car. Awesome job with it and look forward to seeing more!

Do you have any pictures of the custom cold air box?

Grats on 11s! Just got a 2012 MR myself (had a 2010 GSR formerly) and loving the SST!
