New to Mitsu, thinking '08 X GSR

Hello everybody,

I am potentially in the market for '08 to '10 EVO GSR and I have a couple of questions.

First, are there any con's to the '08 models? That is what I am leaning towards for price location. I am sure everyone here loves their EVO's but I am looking for a fast, fun to drive but reliable and not crazy to maintain vehicle. The EVO seems like the perfect answer, but I have never had a Mitsu and don't have any experience with the reliability and maintenance issues.

I hear the paint can be a problem, that is a common Mistu thing apparently.

Second, is it true that with lets say with an intake and exhaust (dp required?) you should absolutely get it tuned? I have heard with the STI's even in stock shape with a tune you can get more power, better mileage and more reliability from the car. Are these the same? Any idea on what something like this might cost to tune? This would be a DD, nothing to go to crazy, but would enjoy something a little faster, louder and more awesome than stock.

Obviously I will be buying this used, hopefully if I can find one it has not been beat to hell, but that is my concern. I would be upset to buy one and then in a few months find I am replacing diffs or trans and such.

Thanks for any help!

1. Get a 2010. It has the better timing chain. (2008 has a timing chain that craps out between 0 and 60k miles [NOT ALL CARS DO THOUGH SO DONT QUOTE ME])

2. 2010 comes with fuse (i'm pretty sure), which allows you to connect through bluetooth to your radio and play music that way.

3. 2010 comes with better tail lights (debatable by some).

4. 2010 has a better exhaust note stock and a better tune stock.

5. 2010 is more new.

6. 2010 comes with color gauge cluster

7. ?????

Don't quote me on any of this stuff btw, It's just what I've seen around here. I'm sure I'm missing some stuff here or I might be wrong about some stuff, others will chime in.

At this point I wouldn't get an '08 Evo X. It doesn't have the color LCD screen in the gauge cluster as mentioned, doesn't have ralliart tails, doesn't have the longer side skirts... Definitely get a '10 between the two. The '11 has a slightly better stock tune, a better sounding stock exhaust, and an upgraded timing chain on 2011's made after February I believe.

So basically everyone says stay away from the 2008, I dont really think the screen should be a reason to stay away, if you are willing to deal with it then its no big deal. Mechanical things are my issue

this isn't the first time i heard somebody mention this. where is this information coming from? is there a new pn or something?

from 08-current, the diff pins are the same. the tranny/diff has stayed the same as well. everything that changed from 08-10 is cosmetics with the exception of the better tune from factory and the newly designed time chain. keep in mind, the new chain is supposedly thicker/heavier so this might have an adverse affect on the engine power output/stress (you might lose 100-200hp from the heavier chain. jk...)

my 08 gsr with 80k miles has no problem with anything. i did fall victim to the cheap plastic pulleys at 60k miles but thats a simple fix with a viable solution. just upgrade your cheap *** mitsu plastic pulleys with the all-mighty hyundai pulley.

So your saying that you wouldn't stray away from 08s completely?

Buy mine lol. I sold it to CarMax a month ago and they just posted it for a decent price.

It's not stock. It's been dyno-tuned to 350ish horsepower crank. Has Magnaflow CBE and Works air filter. Seeing it for sale hurts lol. No issues with it at all.

FWIW I have 92K on my 08 GSR, same experience as ImEv0. No chain stretch, no diff pin issue, etc. Rolling with the Hyundai pulleys and still going strong.
