How much more expensive they are than the previous generations...
I just saw a company selling a full turbo back exhaust for an VIII/IX for $250....
I can't even get a downpipe for that much for the X...
I remember when I had my VIII it only cost me $500 for a proper TBE, what gives?

Hardly. Exhausts are a little more for the X (dual vs. single), but most parts are approximately the same price comparing same brand and quality...intakes, turbochargers, intercoolers, etc.
Comparing some cheap POS Chinese pot metal turboback to anything decent isn't a fair fight. If you want bottom price garbage then shop eBay and you'll be able to find cheap crap for any car you want.
P.S. You can get a quality name brand stainless steel downpipe with dual o2 bungs for the X for under $250, and generic knock-offs for half that. If you can't afford the quality parts to do it right either sell the car or leave it stock.
*edit*
Just to make a point I decided to do a little shopping and just "built" a quality, brand name with warranty, stainless steel turboback for the X, and if you shop really hard it's possible to get one for ~$700 brand new, even cheaper if you want Chinese knock-offs. I'm a big fan of buying the best parts I can so my personal turboback is closer to $2k retail, but doing acceptable quality on a budget is possible.

There are quite a few reasonably priced parts for the X. Shop around I am sure most of the vendors on here like us have deals going on all the time and you can piece yourself together a nice system for a great deal.

You gotta pay to play, new exhausts take R&D to build and test for various aspects and needs (sound, power, etc). And then there's the brand name and mark up to actually make a profit on it so they can continue to bring more products to the market.
Or you can build your own exhaust if you know how to weld, and save even more money.
