Definitely not normal. Did it look like it has been hit? Did you install the previous one? Have a picture of the one you took off?

Yes I installed the last one and am the only one that touches it, it looks like someone grabbed it and squeezed the crap out of it while twisting it off and crushed it a little with their hand, I do have a pic but can't upload it on my iPad for some reason.....

That's what it sounded like - someone grabbed it and squeezed real hard. It is possible to deform them that way.

This. I can't say that I crushed it but it was definitely deformed when I had to squeeze the crap out of it to get it off.

Curious.

Have any pictures of the filter?

Are you serious? Those things are hard as hell. I can't imagine they'd be that easy to crush.. The oil filter wrenches would be destroying them all the time.

I didnt use an oil filter wrench, but I did have a hard time getting the filter off by hand. Maybe I just dont know my own strength....... Or I got some crazy burst of energy when I was grabbing it because I tried crushing it with my hands after the fact and could not, lol.

I've crushed oil filters with my hands before, it really only happens when I struggle to get them off though. I'd say thats probably what happened.

All I can see is a slight dent in the filter, is that what you're talking about? It's nothing to worry about.

Is that an OEM filter? That looks like an OEM DENSO especially since it's made in Thailand.

Funny, I just took one of those apart:

As you can see, if your filter housing has a dent in it, that shouldn't change its ability to filter by much. If nothing else, I could see it increasing the oil pressure in the system by a small amount.

I've definitely dented oil filters like what is shown in your picture taking them off.

Filter wrenches don't do that because they more evenly distribute the force compared to your fingers - and apply it where intended.

I've mangled quite a few myself taking them off, it seems no matter how careful I am to not overtighten them putting them on they are always a pain to get off. Mine usually end up with a screwdriver puncture hole on each side because I am too lazy to buy a filter wrench that actually fits the filter.

Looks like a quality filter. What were your impressions once you took it apart? I've been using OEM Mitsu filters forever.

Wow, really great thread. Looks like I'll be spending the extra $$ on an AMSOIL filter. Thanks for that write up man.
