Evo viii --> gt-r --> evo x mr

Hello everyone... I previously owned an 2004 EVO VIII GSR and I absolutely loved the car... I had to sell it to move overseas and I have missed it ever since then... Fast forward to now where I recently purchased a 2013 Nissan GT-R Premium Edition and already put 775 miles on it in the short period of time I have owned it... So I am now in need of a DD and fast...

I am on the fence here for a a lot of very different cars:

2013 Subaru BRZ Limited - The front runner at this time...
2013 EVO X MR - Absolutely stunning car, outstanding performance and handling characteristics...
2013 BMW 335xi Sedan - Great looking car... Ride comfort better than all but comes with the BMW tax...
2013 Nissan 370Z - Compared to the BRZ this is a bit heavy, but is more powerful and more costly...
2013 Subaru STi - Can't see getting this over an EVO X...
2013 Ford GT500 - That rear end is a bummer...
2013 Honda Civic SI - This is on the bottom of the list...

Any inputs would be greatly appreciated... BTW, attached are some pictures of the new GT-R...

Cheers,

-Nate

Very nice GTR! I would choose either the BRZ or EVO X mr. The X MR will handle great, make power pretty easy with some basic bolt ons and drive similar to the GTR as far as the tranny. The Evo will have 4 doors and can comfortably seat 5. The BRZ is such a fun car but I would see it as a track only car. The car feels light and snappy like a go cart. The downside would be the small backseats which are almost unusable.

Thank you...

The MR is a great car, 4 doors, turbo, AWD and huge fun...

BTW, This is exactly the same feedback that I have needed...

I would also like to add that the BRZ gets 35MPG which is great as a DD... The lack of realistic back seats is hard for me since I do have two growing kids...

You should throw a Hyundai Genesis coupe on that list too. The new 4cyl turbo ones have a lot more power than the BRZ (but weigh a bit more).

IMO the GTR is your performance hound.

So depending on your lifestyle and commute:
-- BRZ/FR-S for fuel economy (that **** ain't going to stay cheap)
OR
-- BMW more premium comfort than Evo and BRZ, yet keeps a high level of performance for enthusiasts, but you'll always enjoy going back to your GTR when you want fast.

--Alternate Suggestion: If you commute a lot and fuel economy is important and your going to buy new and keep stock or lease..maybe VW Jetta/Passat TDi. Lots of torque, for commuting, cruises nicely on the highway. Has a lot of the tech features like the BMW, yet not all of the cost.

Seems weird to be on an Evo site, but I'm trying to talk you out of the Evo. It's just that for most of us the Evo is the closest we can get to the GTR without being able to afford one, because a built Evo is probably best $/whp that can be had, with any car. However, because you have a GTR, even if it's totally stock and you're not going to mod it at all, it's still filling a gap. Having that gap filled means that if you're going to have a daily driver, it really shouldn't be an Evo IMO.

I feel dirty suggesting a VW too. Personally I've never really liked them, but I know when my wife goes to get a new car I'm going to force her to test drive a TDi VW. It's just hard to not consider one for a DD with city 40-44mpg and highway 50-60mpg (easy). Plus the new ones offer great comfort and lots of tech. I just think if you juggled DD for daily grind, comfort and economy and GTR for weekend fun it's a great combo.

If you can afford a GTR plus a daily, are gas prices really a deciding factor on a car? Get something with four doors if you have kids. Evo or BMW!

Great suggestions, I'll have to do some research on the VW Jetta/Passat TDi... I agree about the BRZ/ FR-S regarding the fuel mileage and fun factor... The BMW is an absolute dream to drive too, I am on my 3rd test drive, that 3 series chassis is great!

Since you have a GT-R, I would definitely find a four door sedan that you can comfortable fit the family in. Because you miss your VIII so much, perhaps the X MR is just what you need. My future plan is to get a GT-R as a weekend car as well, while leaving my X MR as my DD. I have one kid with a second on the way That said... the BMW is nice as well if you need more daily comfort. Also consider a 335d?

gas prices can be ugly, depending on how far your commute is daily. I had customers when I worked at a shop that commuted 250miles/day 4 days a week.

If you're familiar with AZ it was from Mayer, AZ to Phx and back. The difference between 19mpg average and 35mpg is the difference of filling up multiple times per week.

I doubt he commutes that much though, just sharing a situation I knew about. But, if we assumed his commute is like mine (I'm guessing I'm average) it's 53miles/day that's 265miles/wk (not counting that I usually drive to lunch because my co-workers like riding in the Evo.)

When comparing my average fuel economy in my GSR (19.0mpg) to a *low* average for a TDi at 44mpg (friend tells me he sees 60 when doing mostly highway). That's the difference of more than 1 tank of fuel per week, and 1/3 of a tank in my friends TDi.

So filling up 8x per month compared to 3-4x per month. Ends up to be quite a difference.

Being wealthy doesn't mean you stay wealthy unless you make smart decisions in how you spend the money you're forced to spend.
If it helps while you consider the cars since you mentioned fuel economy, I've kept my fuel records since I bought my X. Haven't missed an entry. In ~14months I've spend $3.8k in fuel commuting daily.

Thank you! The GT-R is my dream car as well...

As for the DD the X and the BRZ are really my top 2 choices... The BRZ's lack of rear seat is a bit of a disappointment for me... I guess that it is a great time to need a DD...

You are absolutely right! Great motor! Other than that though the car leaves little to be desired... It does not have great gas mileage, it has sloppy handling, and even the track pack Brembo's are inefficient at best... I have been trying to find a reason to get one, in order to buy American... But the performance just does not add up to the sum of the parts...

Sadly, this makes me want the EVO X or the BRZ even more...

I'd be looking at a Jetta TDI, if fuel economy is a priority, or Legacy for winter driving, or an Accord as a great all-around family car.
