Evo X Weird Noise from Wheel! HELP!

Long story short, when I drive my car, I hear a faint whomp noise at low speeds and it seems to disappear with speed though still noticeable. The best I can describe the sound is it feels like I have a flat tire but I don't. When I coast in neutral, I still here the sound.

Now I have gotten an alignment and that wasn't the issue. Lug nuts are all tight on the wheels. I just replaced the rotors and brake pads.

I have lifted the car and checked movement and there was none ( I will double check this again tomorrow morning ).

My thoughts were cv joint or wheel hub/bearing... I believe it is either the right front or left front.

Any thoughts?

I have searched and I have found members with similiar problems but reading through the post I found no solutions other than it might be the wheel bearing.

When you say that you just changed the rotors and pads, are you saying that doing this had no effect on the noise or are you saying that this is when the noise started? If the former, I agree with wheel-bearing or CV joint theory.

I suspect a bearing or CV as well but want to make sure you have swapped your wheels around, just to make sure you've ruled out a wheel issue.

Changed rotors and pads because I thought they wear the problem. ( worn rotors or maybe a rock somewhere ). The rim I have not had time to inspect, I'm off tomorrow so I was going to pull the wheels and check. I have also noticed a slight hum ( reminscent to the tcase whine but much more fainter ) at 35-45, not all the time just in and out which would point to a wheel bearing.

I can order two wheel hubs w/ spindle for 120 each. I haven't researched the cv joint cost yet but I would imagine the same.

My only concern is I have a tune on the 25 along with some other work and I don't want the wheel fudging up on the dyno.

A CV would be noisiest when you turn sharply while moving, so go into a large parking lot, and cruise at like 15 to 20mph, go straight then make some sharp turns. If its the driver side, then you're want to make a sharp left. But the CV would be more of a clunking or ticking noise.

The other thing you want to ascertain is whether the noise increases in repetition as you speed up. That might indicate something with the wheel or axle.

What tires do you have? I had the same issue with my 5000 mile kumho xs. I changed rotors and pads and was on the verge of changing my bearings until a tire shop pointed it out to me. My tires were "cupped". The noise was an oscillating sound at 20mph that drove me nuts. Sounded like a " woooow... wooooow.... wooooow.
Got rid of the kumhos and replaced with sumitomos htrz iii. Best tire for the money. Kumhos replaced tires under warranty.

I agree with jamakan. It sounds like it might be your tires. Either cupped, or the bands in the tire might be starting to fail. If you've got a second set of wheels and tires, try putting them on and seeing if the sound still persists.

good luck!

Tire could be cupped or possibe wheel weight fell off. I wouldnt go with wheel bearing usually that type of noise is worse the faster you go. I would jack up the front end and attempt to shake tire both left and right and up and down. Try both big and small movements. Listen and feel for anything out of the ordinary. Also since its up in the air grab the cv shaft and attempt to wiggle it, if it is loose there is your issue, or atleast one of.

Reviving this thread from the dead.

Replaced rotors and front passenger wheel bearing and noise has stopped

Although, I still need struts since when I hit bumps my car sounds like its falling apart lol.

But yes if anyone experience these noises/symptoms' its most likely the wheel bearing.

Im experiencing the same noise issue. It started when I took a left turn at about 20-30 mph, and it sounds like a flat tire.
Now I'm starting to hear the noise when taking right turns but not as noticeable as with the left turns. I took it to a tire shop and they said my tires are too tall and that they are rubbing the inner fender liner.

I'm still new to working on my own car....how do I check my wheel bearing? Is this something I can do it myself?

What you are describing is definitely the symptoms of a bad wheel bearing.

Can you see evidence of the tire rubbing on the liner?

So I took my car to the shop and they said the wheel bearings are fine.
However they mentioned I have cupping going on with the front tires. The edge or shoulder is not worn out at the same rate as the middle and interior of the tire.

The tires have rubbed the inner lining ever so slightly which seems to happen at full lock:

The tires I have on my car are crappy Westlake SA-07 245/40Z R18 97Y

So I guess it's just crappy rubber being worn down.

Also I had my car aligned on 1/17/14 and I haven't hit anything that could possibly mess the alignment.

I too have the same problem. I took it to the dealer. They checked the car and said it was "normal" car noises. I didn't believe it, do they had a rep from Mitsubishi come and test ride with the mechanic. Still said it was normal. Now I don't know what to do. The mechanic said there was no movement on the wheels after lifting the car so it wan't the wheel bearings. Also tried balancing and rotating the wheels and no change in the noise. What other possibilities? By the way my car is 2013 MR.

Maybe you're just listening too closely for noise. The car doesn't have a lot of sound isolation, and there will always be noise coming from the drivetrain, like brake pads rubbing on the disks, tire noise, etc. I personally would just take the opinion of the shop.
