Heat wrapping

Hey guys,
I'm going to be installing my exhaust manifold and downpipe on the 16th but plan on wrapping my Mani this weekend. I got the wrap tie downs or clamps from DEI being shipped as we speak. I haven't found any guides to wrapping them on here so was wondering if anybody had any tips they could provide. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

I may be wrong but doesn't wraps absorb moisture leading to rust and all that bad stuff? Maybe coat them instead?

Here's the tip.

Don't.

Speak with ETS. Read up as there are a number of posts about the wrapping leading to fatigue. A ceramic coating is good but my experience is, in addition to the fatigue, the wrapping will burn off a tubular manifold over time.

Well crap. You guys are right. I called ETS and they said if it is wrapped the warranty on the mani is only good for a year. They said it is common for them to rust when wrapped. So, looks like I will be coating instead. Any idea on the price to ceramic coat the mani? I emailed the shop I been talking too but am wondering what is the "average" price. Thanks guys!

(Sorry for piggy backing your thread)

What's the importance of heat wrapping (or ceramic coating) the downpipe? Nice to have or must have?

Keeps temperatures down inside engine bay, helps to prevent fires/melting from hot *** manifolds touching something
Edit, you asked about a downpipe, not manifold. Don't see the purpose of wrapping or coating the downpipe. Manifold, different story

Yeah, manifold I could understand, but was curious about heat wrapping the downpipe. Not many people do that I guess.

I always ceramic coat both, plus the turbo turbine housing. I paid $80 for the manifold and $45 for the downpipe at a shop local to me that's always done great work.

www.spcoating.com

My manifold and turbo are done in black, my downpipe in silver.

So I found a shop that said they could cermic coat the manifold for $100. But if I cermic coat it, do I still need to worry about plastic melting under the hood? Also, my car is red and I want the manifold to visually "pop" under the hood. Any suggestions on what color to coat it?

On a side note, if anyone is interested in purchasing DEI titanium heat wrap and tie downs let me know. LOL!

Make sure you get it coated with a quality 2000F ceramic, the 1600F stuff with flake/burn off.

http://www.spcoating.com/Ceramic.html

Titanium or black colors are going to hold up the best. The silver will flake off the manifold, as will any of the color coatings (blue, orange, etc.).

Do a search on the interwebz. If I remember correctly, you can spray or dip the wrap in something, can't remember if it was ceramic paint that will keep the moisture out. I can't remember if it was an Evo board or a V8 board.

You could always ceramic coat then do the wrap on top. That should limit corrosion.

ETA: Here is a link for something similar I saw: http://www.circletrack.com/enginetec.../photo_01.html

They sell a spray that's supposed to waterproof the wrap. Wrap will also keep heat down better than a coating will, but it comes with the downsides of being ugly and sometimes leading to cracks. A good coating will stay looking good for a long time; my downpipe, for example, has about 45k miles on it and the coating looks almost as good now as it did when brand new.

On a EVO X not as much benefit as on a IX or previous models. Downpipe routes under the oil pan, where as the X does not route under the motor.
